Welcome to the Literary Bulletin

Kia ora koutou

Level 2! We hope you are all well and enjoying the chance to see friends and family.

A big congratulations to Ockham Awards winners/NZSA members Becky Manawatu, Jane Arthur and Helen Rickerby, NZSA/Museum Grant recipient Cassandra Tse and our many members who are finalists in the Sir Julius Vogel Awards.

This bulletin contains a link to register for the 2020 Virtual NZSA AGM Saturday June 13, 10am. The AGM weekend always includes an opportunity for connection, so we are running an AGM Virtual Literary Quiz Thursday June 11. Details for registration for both events is below. You will receive details of proposed changes to the constitution this weekend, to consider. Please join us!  This is your chance to vote on the future of NZSA!

All of us had a chance for reflection during lock-down, to think about what the world could look like. This is an opportunity to consider the future and it will be up to writers to articulate those possibilities.

"There is no power for change greater than a community discovering what it cares about." – Margaret J. Wheatley

Ashton Wylie Charitable Trust Literary Awards – Author Profile

Jeremy Cole won the Ashton Wylie Trust Mind Body Spirit Unpublished Manuscript category in 2017 with Divine Laziness: The Art of Living Effortlessly.

The judges said “Jeremy Cole has the knack of making even his writing seem effortless as if to demonstrate that yes, being divinely lazy is a good way to live.”

His work’s original concept and title are a refreshing counterpoint for prevailing current wisdom that insists the only life worth living must be driven by goals and purpose.
“It is an original, profound and exemplary work.”
On the back of winning this award, 'Divine Laziness' was published by Uncarved Block Publications in early 2018.

AWCT invites writers (published and unpublished) who have a holistic and spiritual view of the universe to visit https://www.awct.org.nz/bookawards.asp

Held annually, the Best Published Book and Best Unpublished Manuscript each receive a $10,000 prize for quality works that have the potential to uplift and enhance people, relationships, and society.  Works that truly embrace a holistic perspective and demonstrate the connection between mind body and spirit in insightful ways.

The 2020 Awards’ finalists will be notified late-June and the winners will be announced on Friday 14 August.

Meniscus editors announce new issue live

Huge thanks to all those to trusted their work to this journal, and those who responded to the AAWP call for ‘sudden writings’ for the In/Completeness of Human Experience initiative. Gail Pittaway took the lead on this issue, managed some 1,000 submissions with aplomb. Julia Prendergast and Shane Strange worked with Jen Webb on the In/Completeness submissions (a larger selection of which can be read on the TEXT website (www.textjournal.com.au), Special Issue 58).

It has been clear over recent months that creative expression and creative practice has offered support and sustenance to so many people around the world who have been struggling with the impacts of the pandemic, and of the other natural disasters that have characterised 2020. We hope you are finding a similar space for resilience; we hope you are well, and that your world will soon steady to something more manageable.

And meantime we invite you to read the new issue of Meniscus, at https://www.meniscus.org.au/current-issue

India: PEN Delhi on the importance of press freedom during coronavirus

In a democracy, cracking down on a pandemic requires the active support of a free press and must not include a crackdown on it. This is essential because fighting a pandemic requires a free media not just to inform the people likely to be affected by it but also to act as a watchdog for them, ever more important in a time of crisis.
