The End of the Beginning
First, thank you for supporting our monthly newsletter. We are days from the end of the beginning and the start of our next COVID-19 journey. Much has changed in the last 60 days across the Canadian wine business, affecting where and how wine is sold, and more hopefully, how it may be regulated shortly. It seems the industry of wine is starting to be viewed like any other enterprise in this country - just local people serving and contributing to the local economy. We believe deeply in those locals, to work our way out of this pandemic with due care and attention. Amongst our notes, videos and articles, we hope that you are inspired to responsibly support the many who are depending on you to keep the ball rolling. AG

Domaine de Longue Toque
Vacqueyras 2016 |
Vacqueyras, Southern Rhone, Rhone Valley, France |
A hot, dry growing season was blessed by late August rains that revived the fruit just before harvest. 2016 is a 50/50 mix of grenache and syrah. Described as vegan-friendly, the wine is lively on the entry, with vibrant red and black fruit. A blend of incense-like garrigue is woven into wine, counterbalancing the ripe fruit. Delicious in that focused, powerful Vacqueyras way. You can age this a decade, but it is possible to enjoy it now (if decanted) with grilled lamb chops or other similarly intense menu items. Good value. |

Hemerland Vine Garden 2018 |
Hemel-En-Aarde Valley, Walker Bay, South Africa |
Chris Alheit is one of South Africa's top winemakers and old vine rescuers, working closely with the Old Vine Project to preserve the country's OV heritage, and making expressive wines of place, like this. Alheit calls it Vine Garden, based on the numerous varieties trialled here. The wine is made and bottled just as the vineyard and vintage dictates, creating a white field blend that changes every year. |

Roche
Texture Rosé 2019 |
Okanagan Valley, British Columbia |
The warming weather always triggers my rosé impulses, and I've been so impressed with a range of 2019 BC pinks like Tantalus, Bartier Bros., Culmina and Black Hills, but especially loved Roche's Texture Rosé 2019. Complete enough to sip without food, it has all the drive, flavour and personality to handle anything you want to toss on the grill, or take-out from your local restaurants, like sausage pizza, Vietnamese lemongrass chicken, sushi, or spicy stir-fried noodles. |

Clos du Soleil
Rosé 2019 |
Similkameen Valley, British Columbia |
The 2019 vintage takes this wine to another level. The fruit is vibrant and lean - to the wine’s benefit - with tart strawberry, rhubarb, and, of course, there’s the Similkameen’s unique saline quality. It’s a serious style, not just from its bone dry finish or precise fruit definition, but also the noticeable concentration. It’s the complete package: food-friendly, contemplative, and moreish. Highly recommended and remarkable value. |

Fontanasanta Manzoni Bianco 2018 |
Italy |
As strikingly singular and memorable as the natural wine producer herself, manzoni bianco is a cross of riesling and pinot bianco. embodying both the citrus purity of riesling, and the perfumed orchard blossoms of the bianco. This is organically and biodynamically grown in the limestone / calcareous clay hills above Trento, and was native fermented on the skins in cement tanks, followed by 12 months of aging in acacia casks, concrete, and clay. Tight white fruit is scented with elderflower, meadow herbs, white grapefruit, lemon pith, along a shimmering, tight, energetic palate. |
