NSQHS - Standard 2.8-2.10: Health Literacy
Standard 2.8 requires that "Consumers receive the information they need in a way that is appropriate for them." Health literacy is about how people understand health information, use it to make informed decisions, and how they act upon these decisions to manage their health and wellbeing.
Our Quality team has recently done some fantastic work reorganising how we create consistent, user friendly patient health information flyers. This fortnight CEO Craig Fraser announced we would be moving forward with our Website/Intranet Project. It is now appropriate that we look at consumer information on our website and ensure it meets the diverse needs of our community population.

Excess deaths during the Covid-19 pandemic: An international comparison

From the abstract: "Data were available for 4 European countries (England & Wales, Scotland, Netherlands and Italy) and New York state, United States of America. Results: There was an increase in observed, compared with expected, mortality in Scotland (+68%), England and Wales (+74%), the Netherlands (+58%), Italy (+39%) and New York state (+49%). Of these deaths, only 73% in Scotland, 71 % in England and Wales, 53% in the Netherlands, 54% in Italy and 79% in New York state were attributed to Covid-19 leaving a number of excess deaths not attributed to Covid-19."
This report highlights that not all deaths during the pandemic can be attributed to COVID-19 and recommends people still seek medical attention for serious illnesses.

New England Journal of Medicine's NEJM Resident 360 helps physicians-in-training prepare for their rotations quickly and efficiently. From Rotation Prep to interactive teaching and learning tools, our curated content helps new doctors manage their clinical rotations with confidence.
Access to NEJM Resident 360 starts when a user creates a user profile, this is done using a SWH email. Once registered, full access to all content is free and seamless. Some of the resources on the hub include:
- Rotation Prep : supports learning with an overview of the basics, and expertly chosen resources that provide foundational information, links to landmark clinical trials, and review articles. Covers: 14 rotation areas including mental health, infectious diseases, geriatrics, etc.
- Learning Lab : provides interactive tools videos, podcasts on a variety of medical topics
New resource added : Covid-19 Rx: Treatment Simulations (Do not need a user account to use)
Interactive case covering basic concepts of managing floor patients who are suspected or confirmed of having COVID-19.
"Once in the patient room, your task is to gather data, develop a differential diagnosis, order additional diagnostic tests, and treat the patient. Patient and disease factors and the choice and timing of treatments will impact the outcome of the illness.
You can also consult with several specialists in the simulation that may provide crucial life-saving information. Once you reach clinical stability, you will have the option to go to the call room until the end of your shift, but you may be called back if the patient deteriorates. You can also choose to conclude your shift and get feedback."
