The first two weeks under Alert Level 2 have been a great success. This is largely thanks to the wonderful support from you, our parent community. The systems put in place to support students transitioning back to school began with an overly cautious approach, as safety is our number one priority. As we have become more familiar with operating under these new conditions, we have made changes that balance the need to act responsibly with what we see as common sense. The key is to remain vigilant under the rules of alert level 2. So thank you for your understanding, support and patience. It has been greatly appreciated.
The children arrived last week with big smiles and it has been wonderful to see the happy energy continue. They have loved reconnecting with their teacher and friends and of course, playing on the adventure playground. Teachers have been very strategic when planning and implementing learning programmes to include lots of activities and routines that aim to support and transition students back into daily life at school. This week, teachers have been introducing more structure across all areas of the curriculum, and this is to continue over the coming weeks.
Thank you to all the families who have returned the school iPads loaned out over the lockdown. It was wonderful to be able to support those students needing access to such technologies. We are still waiting on a small number of iPads to be returned, so I’d appreciate you doing this if you are one of those families. We also have had some iPads return with a lesser quality charging plug. If you still have the Apple iPad charging plug, we’d love to have these back as they charge a lot faster which makes it easier for students when using the iPads at school.
I am currently finalising the details for Parent-Teacher Conferences to be held in the final week of this term. This is the week of the 29th June to 3rd July. The purpose of the conferences is to provide you with up to date assessment information on where your child is at. Teachers will lead the discussion and work to co-construct your child’s next learning steps as we want to set individual student goals for Terms 3 and 4. An email with dates, and a link to book times, will be sent early next week.
Information is being received every day with itinerant providers and sporting organisations wanting to get things back up and running. Having extra curricular opportunities available for our students is really important, but please be patient as we are often awaiting information from the various sporting codes or tutors. The image below is the most recent information we have for the following sports: hockey, basketball and netball. At this stage, there are no planned inter school sporting events such as the Cluster Cross Country.
Tahatai Coast School has a lot of exciting property projects set to start this year. The administration block has now been cleared and is being prepared for construction to start in Term 3. C3 have been employed to carry out this work to replace the existing roof with a much more weathertight design, install new windows throughout, and to refurbish the inside of the building. This is a considerable amount of work that will take time. The aim is to have this ready to move into by May 2021. Another large project set to begin in Term 4 is the addition of 4 classrooms. These are roll growth classrooms funded by the Ministry of Education. The modular designed classrooms will provide much needed learning space for our students, as we continue to see the school roll grow. This project involves relocating the after school care building onto the basketball court. The image below shows exactly where these will be located in relation to the existing buildings. A brand new basketball court will be located next to the beach volleyball court.
