Thanks to all who have sent in notices and articles – it is fantastic to be hearing from some of our local schools in this newsletter. It has been a strange time and while much of life is feeling a bit more normal, for many of us it is going to take quite a while before there is a sense of normality. ANOTHER YEAR GONE AND AN INTERESTING ONE COMING
Thanks to all those who attended our AGM on Monday 25th May.
It is always good to look back over the previous year, say a lot of thank yous to all the people who contribute to the Halswell Community Project’s work. This year, of course, we are also thinking about the likely implications of the Covid 19 economic downturn both on us and on the wider community. As yet, these things are not clear and are unlikely to be for a wee while, however there is likely to quite a bit of adapting to do for many of us.

Our guest speaker at the Halswell community Project AGM was Anthea Madill who runs Remix Plastics and who is a proponent of low waste living.
Amongst other things, she teaches workshops to help others think about their waste and runs a business making useful and beautiful stuff out of plastics that are not recycled in your yellow bin. A pair of her earrings were recently spotted on our Prime minister!
Anthea gave us an outline of the ways which she manages to have a low waste lifestyle, the way it benefits her family through lower costs, and the ways that she keeps herself and her family on track. Much of this information is also available on her website.

REMEMBRANCE PATHWAY AT ST JOHN OF GOD

Following dialogue on the Halswell Community Facebook Page we feel that it may be helpful to the residents of Aidanfield to provide more detail on the reasons for closing our Remembrance Pathway.

We very much appreciate the ongoing support and relationship we have with our local community. We rely greatly on over 30 dedicated volunteers who provide such support and enrichment to the lives of our residents. So, it is with some sadness that we have decided to close the pathway.

We have had ongoing issues with security. In recent years, the creek that runs the length of the pathway has gradually dried up. When there was water in it, it created a natural barrier between the pathway and the more manicured grounds of the service. Over the last few years with the creek now dry and as the community has grown, we have had increasing issues with security. This has included people crossing over the creek into the grounds and leaving rubbish, dog faeces, picking fruit, taking vegetables, and often accessing the wider grounds after dark. While we know that it is only the actions of a few, it has resulted in staff and residents often feeling unsafe and that their privacy is being breached.

At present we have a considerable amount of signage at our gate and up our driveway asking the public to respect our bubble yet last weekend we had two intruders onto the property which the Police have since followed up. People often think that because it is a formed road, that means it is public property, but it is not. It is the back yard where our residents live, and we take their privacy seriously. Closing the Remembrance Pathway is just one measure we are taking to try and increase safety for our residents and staff.

Further through 2020 we will evaluate the closure, aimed towards a solution that supports the community and the safety of residents and staff. Knights Stream School eagerly reopened its gates to welcome the tamariki back after eight weeks in isolation. The first two days on site have shown just how wonderfully resilient and amazing our tamariki are. Children were very happy reconnecting with their kaiako (teachers) and friends. The place was abuzz with laughter and infused with sanitiser and foam soap!
The kaiako had to learn some new skill sets - connecting via Zoom, blogs and Seesaw. We wanted to ensure we provided purposeful and meaningful learning that was achievable in the home. Our parents managed to do their best, teaching and working from home and most importantly ensuring our tamariki were cared for and coping well mentally. Our mantra was “do what you can, when you can”.
Children were eagerly accepting learning challenges. We saw creativity blossom from the home classroom. Baking, sewing, Lego creations, drawing and nature arts during “crafternoon time”. Obstacle courses were made using a range of home apparatus and furniture. There were some amazing sibling coaches cheering on their school aged playmates and an elite camera crew of parents. Fitness was a shared activity where families roamed the streets in bubbles and connected more with their neighbours than before.
We will continue to provide a welcoming, inclusive and positive school culture. Our aspiration is that students, whānau and staff will embrace the Knights Stream School values in order to develop and maintain this positive school culture. This certainly helped us get through this tough time together.
Students and staff will continue to live our vision as “courageous learners who positively influence the world” - whether this be inside or outside the school gates.

OAKLANDS WELCOMES STUDENTS BACK TO SCHOOL

It was exciting for Oaklands Te Kura o Ōwaka to re-open and welcome back students at Alert Level 2. It was doubly exciting that builders Hann Construction could also return and restart the school’s redevelopment. The redevelopment includes three new buildings and the total refurbishment of the two original long red brick blocks. All new buildings have been finished, and the brick blocks (pictured) are scheduled for completion before the end of the year.

The other exciting development is the school’s name change. Te Taumutu Rūnanga gifted the school the name Te Kura o waka. The name Ōwaka refers to the movement of waka. An area near the school where the Heathcote River and the Halswell River link was traditionally used for transporting waka between the two bodies of water. The Board of Trustees combined the gifted name with Oaklands School - creating the name Oaklands Te Kura o Ōwaka.

NETSAL CENTRE FOR NGĀ PUNA WAI
This afternoon, a Hearings Panel chaired by Cr Tim Scandrett decided Ngā Puna Wai Sports Hub is a suitable home for the new indoor 10-court facility.
The Panel has given its support to reserve land at Ngā Puna Wai being leased for up to 33 years as the site, but says changes are needed to resolve traffic, parking and access issues.
The next step is for this recommendation to go before councillors for a final decision.
The recommendation follows a community consultation process earlier this year. Of the 92 submissions received by the Council on the Netsal Centre proposal, 76 per cent were in favour, and 24 per cent were opposed to granting the lease.
For those unfamiliar with futsal, it's an indoor variant of football which is becoming one of the country’s fastest growing sports. Netsal is an organisation jointly set up by Mainland Football Federation and the Christchurch Netball Centre, and would develop, own and operate the facility as a new home for both sports.

KEEP ACTIVE! is a fun, social setting for anyone to help maintain or improve their fitness.
These sessions comprise an aerobic warm-up, circuit activities, stretching cool-down and a social cuppa.
Join others from the community who find attending these sessions very helpful/beneficial – balance improved, able to lift things more easily, stamina increased, more flexible, sleep improved, feel more alive 🙂

Anglican Parish of Halswell & Prebbleton
St.Mary's Church at 329 Halswell Road, Halswell and All Saints Church at Blakes Road, Prebbleton will continue with its online services during Lockdown Level 2 due to the social distancing rule and limited number of persons that can meet up.

Services commenced Sunday the 31st May at All Saints at 9.15 a.m and at St.Mary's at 10.30 a.m.
8.00 a.m service will not be held for now.

Halswell Wigram Rugby Football Club

To all our Halswell Wigram Family,
I hope you all have been safe during this tough and unusual time.

As you know, this rugby season has had a slow start, but fingers crossed we see light at the end of the tunnel.
In the likely event that rugby training's return close to normal very soon, I want to bring a couple of hygiene protocols to your attention that must be adhered to.

We ask that parents wait in the car where possible when dropping off and picking up players after training.
Ensure players always take a named drink bottle with them to trainings .

Other specific measures such as sanitising of equipment, washing of hands, allocation of fields etc will also take place along with other specific hygiene protocols.
As a Club we are taking the approach of not rushing into things to ensure we have everything in place to keep our Rugby family safe.
A ‘Return to Play’ document will be forwarded to coaches and managers outlining these protocols and how they will be actioned. These protocols will be signed off by CRFU.
Some of you will have seen by now, the most recent media release from New Zealand Rugby about preparing for the return of the community game under Alert Level 2.
In short, the release outlines a three-stage approach for all clubs/schools in New Zealand to follow, in preparation for a return to training and games.

Phase 1 Prepare to Train From 14 May - 25th May (no training) Halswell Wigram will commence training the week after Queens Birthday weekend, 02 June.
Phase 2 Prepare to Play (dates to be confirmed, subject to Government advice)
Phase 3 Play (dates to be confirmed – ‘hopefully’ June 20th, subject to Government advice)

With any luck, we will be working towards these dates to get everyone back on the fields. We will be getting more information out to you all via emails from Coaches/Managers, on our Facebook page and website.

We have had lots of enquiries about employment rights during the pandemic.
For example, if your employer has lost business because of Covid-19 and just made you redundant effective immediately. Is that legal?
Employers and employees must discuss in good faith the implications of Covid-19 on their working arrangements. This means that before making employees redundant they must follow a fair process whenever they want to make an employee redundant. If an employer does make employees redundant, they must give notice to the employee in writing with among other things information about the notice period. If the employment agreement has no specific clause giving a period of notice in a redundancy situation, 'reasonable notice' must be given.
If you are concerned that your employer is not following the rules about using the wage subsidy you can make a complaint to Employment Services.

HALSWELL HALL – THE CORNERSTONE OF THE HALSWELL COMMUNITY FOR MORE THAN 100 YEARS
We are pleased to advise that the Hall re-opened on Thursday May 14^th and we had our hire groups return under the Level 2 restrictions. Our larger groups should be returning by early June.

We were fortunate to complete the scheduled new vinyl in our kitchen and the re-surfacing of the floors in the rest of the Hall at Level 3 with no disruption to our users and a very fresh, clean and tidy premises to welcome back our hirers. We acknowledge the support and assistance of Air Rescue in covering the full cost of the vinyl replacement by way of a Grant. The Hall is looking great and we are already receiving enquiries for function hire. We welcome all
enquiries and even if you just want to have a look at our facilities for some time in the future, please do get in touch. We do have times available during the day available for hire especially our Sunbeam Lounge which is ideal for small groups for activities or meetings.

We have had a change on our Committee with Brenda Newton resuming her role as Chair for her second year. We have two new Committee members this year both looking to play an active role in the management of the Hall.

The Hall remains in a strong financial position even with the
set-backs of this time although some maintenance work is on hold until a bit further down the track.

Your Community Hall is run by a small group of volunteers who oversee the bookings and maintenance of this excellent Community facility. It is owned by our Community and we always welcome any enquiries regarding bookings for functions or social activities. At the Halswell Hall we offer a range of facilities with the main Hall having a capacity of 200. We also have an excellent meeting room (The Sunbeam
Lounge) which can accommodate up to 50. This adjoins our upgraded kitchen and is ideal for smaller groups. The meeting room is readily available, and we welcome your enquiry. For any enquiries about availability or our facilities please email us at halswellhallchch@gmail.com.
