Bioinformatics subjects at JCU going online

Starting in semester 2 2020 the department of molecular and cell biology will be teaching its bioinformatics subjects (BC3203/BC5203) online.  This is an opportunity for graduate students who are not Townsville based to take this subject for the first time.

This subject will be of particular interest to students whose projects involve analysis of large molecular datasets. Graduate students who complete this subject will be credited with 40 hours towards their professional development requirements.

For more information see the JCU subject guide https://secure.jcu.edu.au/app/studyfinder/?subject=bc5203 or contact the subject coordinator (ira.cooke@jcu.edu.au)
Online Training Opportunities through QCIF

QCIF are offering regular online training through the COVID-19 lockdown period.  The next two training opportunities are open for registration (see below).  In addition, if you are interested in instructing or helping with future workshops please contact Mark Crowe, QCIF’s Training Manager (mark.crowe@qcif.edu.au) or Chantelle Pinnington (chantelle.pinnington@jcu.edu.au).

R for Reproducible Scientific Research

Collaboration with QCIF to strengthen bioinformatics capacity at JCU

This month saw CTBMB member, Dr. Justin Lee start work on a project to build platforms for genome annotation.  The project is part of the Australian Biocommons initiative and will allow Justin to remain based in Townsville while working extensively with developers in Brisbane.
R Communities in Cairns and Townsville

Cairns: Experienced and aspiring R users are very welcome. Our meetings will be re-starting shortly using zoom .  Please contact Martha Cooper (martha.cooper@my.jcu.edu.au) or Olivia Rowley (olivia.rowley@jcu.edu.au) for more information

Please contact Martha Cooper (martha.cooper@my.jcu.edu.au) or Olivia Rowley (olivia.rowley@jcu.edu.au) for more information”

Townsville: Townsville’s R community started in 2019 inspired by the group in Cairns.  We meet Mondays at 11 on Zoom.  New members are encouraged to join the slack channel for updates (https://coder-tsv.slack.com/), follow the group on twitter (https://twitter.com/codertsv) and check the group website https://codertsv.github.io/ for access to past presentations.  If you’d prefer not to use Slack please contact Chloe Boote (chloe.boote@my.jcu.edu.au) and ask to be added to the email list.
Hacky Hour

The aim of Hacky Hour is to help researchers (staff and research students) with research-related IT problems.  It’s free, informal and all researchers/helpers are welcome to drop into the Slack space for advice or offer their IT expertise to help others.

Popular topics for discussion include:
·         high-performance computing (HPC),
·         cloud computing,
·         general programming,
·         R,
·         Python,
·         Linux,
·         data processing,
·         data storage; and
·         data management.

The channel will also have information on upcoming training, workshops and events.

Anyone who is interested in joining and/or helping out, please come along and introduce yourself:

Journal Club

Journal Club is an informal discussion of current papers on population genetics, genomics, microbiome, proteomics, eDNA and anything else related to DNA and its applications!

Every second week a person selects a paper (preferably recently published) that would like to discuss and emails it to the group so the rest have time to read it before JC. That person would start introducing the methods and results of the paper and then we all discuss the strengths and weaknesses of the study. It is a great opportunity to talk about new ideas and/or methods and how we could incorporate them into our own research in a friendly, “no pressure” environment.

The current Journal Club convenor is Cecilia Villacorta-Rath.  If you would like to join please send her an email on cecilia.villacortarath@jcu.edu.au .  This will ensure that you receive Journal Club emails

Come join us every second Friday of the month on zoom.  To receive emails with fortnightly zoom links please sign up to the mailing list.
Abstract submission now open for BCC2020 and BOSC

This year two of the world’s largest bioinformatics community conferences, BOSC and GCC will be joining forces and going online.  This conference will include regular talks as well as training and a collaboration fest.  Conference dates are July 17-21. Please check out https://bcc2020.github.io/ for more information. To submit an abstract go to https://bcc2020.github.io/submit/
