The Hay Festival is online this year! Join us on the English PEN Platform for a conversation about writing into an authoritarian world, finding ways of telling truths, and making the case for Human Rights, with author Elif Shafak, and President of English PEN Philippe Sands.
We've launched a special series on PEN Transmissions, in collaboration with the British Museum and Edmund de Waal, to celebrate Edmund's Library of Exile installation. To begin, our Events and Partnerships Manager Hannah Trevarthen spoke to Edmund about literature, trauma, and the power - yet fragility - of libraries.
Do you work for a UK-based publisher? Our PEN Translates award is open for submissions until 31 May 2020. It helps UK publishers to meet the costs of translating new books into English – whilst ensuring translators are paid properly for their work.
Editor, reporter, and poet Nedim Türfent begins his fifth year behind bars this month. In his letters to our members, Nedim often emphasises how important solidarity is to him. We ask if you can help transcend the confines of his prison cell, and write a message of support this month.
Join us on 29 May for our monthly vigil in solidarity with writers, journalists and activists at risk and imprisoned in Saudi Arabia. Please show your support for our colleagues and amplify the calls for their releases using #virtualvigil and #StandWithSaudiHeroes on Twitter.
