Pentecost & Communion
Worship Service

Sunday, May 31, 2020

This Sunday marks the 50th day since Easter, and our eleventh Sunday of not worshiping together in the same sacred space. How different from the first Pentecost when the disciples were all together in one place when the Spirit's flaming tongue and thrashing winds descended upon them. Sadly, we will not be together this Pentecost. So, let us all the more place our trust in the power of the Holy Spirit to bind us as one.

Two pieces of preparation I offer in anticipation of our time together. First, we will share in the sacrament of communion, so you are invited to have some form of bread and cup before you. Second, reading the Pentecost story ahead of time will be very helpful as we will not hear it, at least in that form, in the service. CLICK HERE to read Acts 2:1-21.

The recorded service will be sent out on Saturday evening, and you are encouraged to view it at 10am Sunday (our new summer worship time), so that we can commune with one another.

May your evening be blessed, and filled with...

Peace,
Andy
The "Reopening" Plan

Dear Hanover Saints,
From 18th and Baynard, I offer this update about where we are in the process of reopening the doors of our church for worship. As we reported last week, we will continue with virtual (recorded) worship services this Sunday (see below) and the following Sunday (June 7; the youth-led creation care service). At this time we are continuing the ban on all ministries and programs in the church with the exception of the food pantry.

On this coming Monday evening the Session and the Worship Committee will have a joint meeting to discuss the process for reopening the church. The conversation will include defining exactly what needs to happen in order to do so safely, as well as how we will decide when the time is right.

Very soon, if not immediately, after the meeting we will use all of our means of communicating to share the results. In the meantime, if you have any questions, please do not think twice about reaching out to me or Twyla in the church office.

Peace,
Andy
As we would normally include this as an insert in our weekly bulletin, here is some information on the Presbyterian Mission program for Pentecost.  To make a donation to this special offering, please mark your check as "Pentecost Special Offering" on the memo line.  Thank you.

If we all do a little, it adds up to a lot.

This Is Our Time Campaign Update
Dear Hanover Saints,
It's gonna be loud and it's gonna be messy! Soon, jack hammers will be tearing up the floor of the Gathering Place. Before the work above the floor can begin, work needs to be done below the floor. A large section of the floor will be removed and re-cemented due to, shall we say, inconsistencies in the floor. Soon, the "humps" in the floor will be gone and Isaiah's prophecy will be fulfilled: the uneven ground shall become level, and the rough places plain!

But that's not the only dirt we'll be raising....
Soon backhoes and shovels will be digging a trench from the Baynard side of the building into the Boulevard to install a new water line. This trench is required in order to install larger water lines that will provide the necessary pressure needed to provide safety and security for all who use our gym.

May God bless our ditches, digging, and deconstruction as it leads to our reconstruction, renewal, and revival!

Peace,
Andy
In our ongoing effort to stay connected and support one another, we have scheduled a weekly Zoom meeting on Wednesdays from 5:30-6:30. All are encouraged to check in, and you can do so with an internet-connected computer, smart phone, or telephone. Next Wednesday we will ask...

Where was God on that street in Minneapolis when George Floyd took his last breath?

Praise God for the safe space to learn and grow together - especially in the midst of crisis.
Peace,

Andy

A "VIRTUAL" JEREMIAH'S COFFEEHOUSE!
This talent call is going out to everyone - we'd like to have a "virtual" Jeremiah's Coffee House!  If you have something to share - musical, poetry, a story, a craft - anything - take a short recording of it and send it in to the Church Office at: churchadmin@hanoverchurch.org.  Once we gather our recordings, we'll have Tom Davis work his magic on them, and make them into a "virtual" coffeehouse.
Inspiration for these days
I do not know when we can gather together again in worship, Lord.

So, for now, I just ask that:

When I sing along in my kitchen to each song on Stevie Wonder's "Songs in The Key of Life" album, that it be counted as praise.

And that when I read the news and my heart tightens in my chest, may it be counted as a prayer of confession.

And that when my eyes brighten in a smile behind my mask as I thank the cashier may it be counted as passing the peace.

And that when I water my plants and wash my dishes and take a shower may it be counted as remembering my baptism.

And that when the tears come and my shoulders shake and my breathing falters, may it be counted as prayer.

And that when I stumble upon a Tabitha Brown video and hear her grace and love of you may it be counted as a hearing a sermon.

And that as I sit at that table in my home, and eat one more homemade meal, slowly, joyfully, with nothing else demanding my time or attention, may it be counted as communion.

Amen.
