Tauranga Boys' College Newsletter

12th June 2020
Robert Mangan,  Principal

Dear Parents, Caregivers & Friends of the College

The highlight this week has been the move to Alert Level 1 across the country.

I congratulated our boys on this achievement today at my online assembly with the words of the Prime Minister "our team of 5 million came together to eliminate COVID-19".  I also emphasised the importance of not letting the period of lockdown be an excuse for not achieving their potential in 2020 in academic achievement, sport or cultural activities.  Our teachers are working hard to support all our boys overcome any barriers that existed to their learning during lockdown, identifying those who need additional support to catch up on their learning and get internal assessment tasks completed.  As advised previously, across the senior school we have set the date of July 3rd as the due date for NCEA internals.  This is to enable all boys to complete these assessments with face to face support of their classroom teacher.  In addition to this, the changes to the NCEA qualification with students able to gain additional credits in 2020 and the extension later in the year by 10 days to the NCEA external exams, should ensure the qualification is accessible to the vast majority of our students in 2020 despite the extended period not in the classroom this year (further details in this newsletter).

If you have concerns about your sons' engagement and need support with his learning please email his subject teacher directly or year level tutor so we can further support his academic progress.

We are working hard to identify those boys who are seen as at risk of not achieving and will develop strategies and programmes to maximise their chance of success in the assessment process.  I would appreciate your support of your son in this process to ensure any excuses for lack of achievement are mitigated.

Level 1 means it is back to normal for the college with continued attention to hygiene and the need to stay home if unwell.  I am optimistic the experience of COVID-19 will have heightened our boys awareness of personal hygiene and the importance of and managing their own health and wellbeing.  The really positive news  is that sport and cultural activities can return to normal and our boys can now experience our broad, rich and engaging curriculum.  Further on in this newsletter are details of our recent and upcoming sporting fixtures.  The other significant change as signalled in my update earlier in the week, is that spectators are very welcome back to the college, so we look forward to seeing you in the school grounds.

My thanks to all in our TBC community for your support, cooperation and understanding through what has been a very challenging time.  I am really pleased with how our boys, staff and our parent community have responded to the challenges presented over this time and assure you the staff of the college will do all we can to ensure your son experiences the success and achievement he deserves in 2020.

Mr Graham Anderson
 Tauranga Boys' College
~1965 - 1990~

We acknowledge the passing of Mr Graham Anderson, a past staff member of the College, on Sunday 7th June - three days before his 90th birthday.  Graham was affectionately known as "Gravel" by both his teaching colleagues and his many pupils at the College and will be fondly remembered as a gentleman who would drop anything to help others.

Graham joined TBC in 1965 and was heavily involved in coaching rugby and was teacher in charge of rugby from 1968 to 1974 and housemaster of Mansfield House.  In 1974 he was appointed Head of English, a position he held until his retirement in 1990.  Graham was also heavily involved over the years in school productions, debating, public speaking and prizegiving.

We acknowledge Graham's 25 years of loyal service to TBC and express our condolences to his family.

NCEA UPDATE

NZQA have announced changes to the NCEA qualifications for 2020.

Students working towards an NCEA can gain additional credits, based on the number of credits they achieve during the 2020 school year.  For every 5 credits a student achieves towards their NCEA through internal or external assessment, they can be awarded an additional 1 credit - known as Learning Recognition (LR) Credits.

Students at NCEA Level 1 are eligible for up to a maximum of 10 additional credits while those at Levels 2 and 3 are eligible for up to a maximum of 8 additional credits.

Students will be awarded a certificate endorsement if they achieve 46 credits at Merit or Excellence level, rather than the usual 50.  Students achieving 12 credits at Merit or Excellence level in a course - rather than 14 - will be awarded a course endorsement.  If your son has any questions, he can ask his teacher or one of his tutors.

INTERNATIONAL STUDENT LEADER

SUNGJU 'MATTHEW' KIM

International Student Leader, Matthew Kim's speech to the students at Assembly recently:

Kia ora. Hallo. Konnichiwa. Nihao. Bonjour. Hola. Sawadee. Annyeong. Hi boys. My name is Matthew Kim, I am from Korea, and I am an international student leader.

Each international student has an unique story of studying in New Zealand and I am here to share my reflections. When I first got into the school, everything was different from what I was familiar with: different language, different culture, different education systems, and different appearances of people. As an international student, I have spent all three years trying to understand what was going on around me and striving to survive in the new environment. I had to smile to pretend like I understood what they said; I had to pretend like I was okay with how they made fun of me being Asian because I didn’t know how to explain that I didn’t want to hear such things and It was really hard for me to snap out of a bad mood. Such things made me blame the nationality of    myself and question my understanding of different cultures and education systems.  However, such things did not stop, and it is still continuing these days. The thing I learned from such things is that I have to be strong to myself and show resilience and tolerance to everyone. I do not blame people for not understanding various cultures. but as International student leader for 2020 one of my aims is to break down these barriers and work on acceptance. We need to grow a cultural understanding of each other.

Next thing I want to talk about is globalisation. The world of your future will require you to deal easily and often with people from other countries. The world is and will be increasingly globalised, in terms of trade and relations between countries, and the collaboration needed for clever and innovative businesses. Therefore it is even more imperative that we grow and accept each other for who we are.  I want to say this to both kiwi and internationational students.  Here you are, still very young, but already having a chance to learn a new culture, mix with new people, share ideas and be strong and independent. How lucky are we??

These things will stand you in good stead to be successful global citizens, whether living in your home countries or living in another country elsewhere. As we all know, TBC is a unique school with many nationalities making up the student body. I am really proud to say I am an international student leader and represent the variety of the many cultures. As an international student leader, my aim is to promote relationships between students from different nationalities and to develop respect and understanding for each other’s cultures. I will make the international student community more powerful and also I will endeavour to ensure that our International students here at TBC assimilate more into our school community. Finally, I want to share with you what the lockdown during Covic-19 meant for me. I have never experienced such difficult conditions in my life. It was really either a positive or a negative for us. Even though it had different meanings for everyone, the one thing we had in common was that we all had responsibilities and we all had to work together to overcome the situation. I believe the covid-19 enhanced the awareness of the responsibility that we as citizens hold, and it made us more confident and work together much more easily if any kind of harsh conditions face us in the future. Coming together is a beginning

Staying together is a progress

And Working together is a success

I would like to end my speech with a short Korean prayer about working together as a community to prosper in hard times.

술잔을 들자하니

천하가 내 발 아래 있고

친구들 또한 옆에 있으니

염라대왕 또한 두렵지 않구나

Thank you boys 감사합니다 형님덜

HEALTH & WELLNESS
With a heightened awareness of health and well-being due to COVID-19, I share information from the BOP District Health Board below relating to Rheumatic Fever prevention and HPV immunisation that needs your attention.
HPV Immunisation
High School Catch Up Programme

Our senior boys will continue to be offered the opportunity to be involved in the government funded HPV (human papilloma virus) immunisation programme.  Many students will have had their HPV vaccine at Intermediate, however many also missed out.  We began this catch up programme in term 3 last year and continued in term one 2020.  Due to school closure as a result of COVID-19, this programme was delayed but we will be offering this again as soon as possible.

Some facts about HPV:
  • HPV is a virus that causes HPV cancers in both males and females
  • Nearly 8/10 people will be exposed to HPV in their lifetime
  • HPV vaccination is being very effective at protecting against this virus
  • It is now FREE for males up to age 26
A consent form is required to be filled in and signed by a parent /caregiver if under 16 years old prior to the vaccination taking place, however, all boys are strongly encouraged to discuss this with parents / caregivers despite being allowed to self consent over 16 years of age.  The consent form contains detailed information and advice.

If you have any queries, please contact one of our school health nurses: Vicki Keenan or Annalise Thomas.

Tauranga Boys' College
Old Boys' Association

The Tauranga Boys' College Old Boys' Association began in 2008 when we celebrated our 50th Jubilee.  Since that time we have developed an Old Boys' database to which is sent a newsletter every couple of months detailing what is going on at school as well as with our Old Boys scattered all around the globe.  Many of our students have family members who have previously attended Tauranga Boys' College and it would be great to have their details on our Database too.  If you are an Old Boy or know Old Boys who are not on our database then please email details to Rob Leslie on r.leslie@tbc.school.nz who is the Staff Representative on the Old Boys Committee.  If you are on Facebook the TBC Old Boys have a page there as well which you may find of interest.
