A Message From Our Principal
Welcome to week 8 of term 2. As our Prep, Grade 1 and Grade 2 students settle back into school, we continue to plan for our middle school and senior school students to return next week.

I believe that the success of our return to school for our junior students has been aligned with our school values:
  • If anyone (students, staff and families) has been unsure of certain practices or protocols, they have shown curiosity in finding an answer or working towards a solution.
  • Through times of challenge and change, people have shown courage and resilience in confronting and overcoming obstacles and adjusting to a ‘new normal’.
  • Despite everything that may be happening around us, our kindness and community spirit has shone through.
For as long as we remain focused on our core values, we will continue to have success together, even as the occasional challenge or change arises along the way.

We will continue to communicate our practices, policies and protocols regarding the return to school for our students in Grades 3, 4, 5 and 6. Please stay tuned to Compass for updates as they arise. Importantly, we are trying to maintain the consistency and routine we have developed across the return to school for our Prep, Grade 1 and Grade 2 students.

As Gareth shared in our last newsletter, we have been successful in obtaining funding for significant building works. The planning process is at an advanced stage and we will continue to work collaboratively to ensure this project is delivered in a timely manner and with a focus on providing an outstanding physical environment for our students to work in.

We have recently completed landscaping works in the ‘passive play’ area between the gymnasium and the ‘Mod 10’ (two-storey) classrooms. This work provides a communal space for our students to enjoy and is part of a broader plan to continue to upgrade our outdoor spaces.

Next Monday 8th June is the Queen’s Birthday public holiday. I hope everyone enjoys this time safely with family and friends. We are already looking forward to the following day, Tuesday 9th June, whereupon our Grades 3 to 6 students will return and our school will be ‘whole’ again.

Thanks for your support, keep doing your best.

Rohan.
A Message From Our School Council President
I reiterate Rohan’s sentiments that we are looking forward to finally having all of our students back at school- TOGETHER SOON ENOUGH! It will make life easier for everyone as we transition to a consistent approach to teaching across the school. I’m sure that there will be a lot of relieved parents out there.

Thanks for everyone’s patience over the last couple of weeks as the school managed the back to school logistics. However, I ask for your patience again as double the amount of students and parents will be attending pick-up and drop-off. The school will continue to monitor the processes and evolve the process if needs be.

Thanks to all the teachers and staff for moving back into a physical teaching environment. We appreciate your commitment and the time that you have spent in managing the process, notwithstanding all of the social distancing imposed by the Department, especially as many of us parents are still not allowed back into our work places.

The school will continue to evaluate the learnings from remote learning and determine whether any of it can be incorporated into the ongoing curriculum. There is always the risk that we may need to reinstate remote learning so we need to be ready to go.

It’s great to see the local community opening up – and Port Melbourne is an amazingly tight community. Many local businesses have supported the school over the years and we look forward to supporting them.

The Resilience Project @ Home

It has been great to see and hear lots of positive energy with the TRP program as teachers and students transition back to school. We are really pleased to continue to support you and the well-being of your school community.

More than ever focusing on the mental health of our students is going to be really important. The following article provides some great insights as well as recognising what a wonderful job teachers have done throughout this period too! Click here to read the article

MINDFULNESS ACTIVITIES

This week we’ve added new activities to the Mindfulness section of TRP @ Home. Mindfulness is a great way to help us slow down, particularly when we are feeling anxious. This might be relevant to some students as they recommence  face to face learning and a change in environment. Click the links below to view the activities.

Captains' Report
Dear Senior School students, families, teachers and staff,

Tomorrow is your last day of online schooling! Yay! Soon you’ll be hanging out with all your friends and chatting with your teachers. Students you have done an amazing job and this has become a big part of history. We would like to start off by thanking Mr Cooper for adapting and looking after the school barely knowing anyone! To the staff for their continuous support and hard work. We would also like to acknowledge the parents involved and the families for still helping and pushing through. And of course to the students for being wonderful and the Year Six Student Leadership Team for their ongoing commitment.

Just a reminder the light at the end of the tunnel is four days away! Everything will be okay. Make sure you are still social distancing and washing/sanitising your hands because there might be another outbreak. Stay safe!

Performing Arts Captains Report
Hi Everyone,
In honour of our last week at home, we decided that this week should be dedicated to us all coming together. We in the music and arts department think you have all done a fabulous job of staying positive and occupying yourself with fun and creative things to do. Even if you just watched telly because that's pretty much what I (Nina) did. To give yourself thanks that you stayed tuned in to your work while also giving yourselves self care, search up some videos of your favourite artists and Disney channel characters performing for you. We hope you’ve enjoyed homeschooling and are looking forward to going back to school and seeing everyone. I know we are all very excited to see you!

Weekly Staff Profiles
This week, we profile Poppy Sandillion of 2A and Kristen Cutting of 2D.
Poppy, our Year 2 Team leader, graduated with a Degree in Education and a Post Graduate Degree in Teaching in the UK, before commencing her teaching career in a primary school in South London. She moved to Melbourne six years ago and joined our staff in 2014. She has worked with a number of staff across the years to create bright, engaging and collaborative learning environments.

When not at school, Poppy follows her hobbies of drawing, painting, reading and spending time with friends, while continuing plans for her wedding with her fiancé, Paul.
Since finishing her Early Childhood degree in Adelaide, Kristen has taught in several primary schools within South Australia, New South Wales and Victoria. She relocated to Melbourne in 2007 with her husband Mike and daughter Mackenzie. Seven years ago they made the seaside move to Port Melbourne and absolutely love the beachside community.

Outside of school Kristen enjoys spending time with her family and friends. She loves travelling both in Australia and also overseas. Kristen has a passion for The Arts and really enjoys being involved in School Productions and Musicals.
