In the Interim

Good day,

As I write, peaceful protests in defense of black lives continue to grow in cities and towns in all 50 states. I think this is good news. And I pray for those who continue to put their bodies on the line for justice.

Violence committed against protesters by police, egregious and unnecessary, is being recorded and reported. I think this is good news. And I pray for the victims of that violence. I pray that those who perpetrate it will be held accountable for it. And I pray that their hardened hearts will one day soften.

The three officers who witnessed George Floyd’s death have now been charged, and the charges against the officer who killed him have been upgraded. I think this is good news. And I pray for justice in this case and also for the families of those many others killed before for whom no justice has yet come.

There is still much that is uncertain and so much more that must be accomplished for “justice to truly roll down like water.”

In a time of great challenge and heartbreak in our world, what does our faith ask of us?

At this year’s fully virtual General Assembly (GA), we will explore the power, possibility, purpose, struggle, and joy of finding the path forward together as Unitarian Universalists. During this time of rapid change, the collective practice of our faith evolves and adapts to follow that path. Whether you're a first-time delegate or a long-time attendee, please join us at a pre-GA webinar to learn about some of these changes. Members of the Board of Trustees will provide an overview of some of the changes, along with information for delegates regarding the business sessions.

Eight 75-minute webinars are offered between June 5 and June 18. We look forward to talking with you! Please register here.

The Safe Congregation Committee will hold a Drop-in Session

Sunday, June 7
at 7:00pm

for a community check-in about the Ministerial Search process.

A Zoom link wil be emailed to all friends and members on Sunday.

Are you interested in attending the Virtual UU General Assembly this month?

First Parish is eligible to send up to 3 delegates to the UUA General Assembly (GA). This year it is a virtual conference. If you attend as a registered delegate, you have the opportunity to attend workshops, discussion groups, and vote at UUA meetings on policies and positions. For more information on this year’s GA, please go to https://www.uua.org/ga. The cost of registration is $150. The Parish committee can help to partially defray this expense for up to three delegates. If you are interested, please send an email to: parishchair@fpwatertown.org. This is a great opportunity to get more deeply acquainted with UU issues, concerns and initiatives across the country and to come back

How can we better help one another in times of struggle?

Do you or someone at FPW need temporary assistance to get through a challenging time?  The Fellowship Committee has established an FPW Caring Circle that can offer help. We can set up a Meal Train site where you can list needs for meals, rides or other services during short term difficulties and distribute the information to the congregation via email. For more information, simply email care@fpwatertown.org and let us know how we can help.

This Sunday we will be worshiping together online using Zoom.

If you haven’t yet used Zoom, you’ll want to go to zoom.us, click “Join Meeting,” and download the software. Then you’ll be all set for Sunday morning. There is a link for joining by computer, laptop, or smartphone, as well as a phone number for joining on any telephone, that was sent out through Breeze to all church members and friends - if you did not receive it, please contact Wendy (minister@fpwatertown.org) or Allison (office@fpwatertown.org) and we will send it to you.

The worship service will begin at our normal time - 10:30am - but you are encouraged to join the video call early so you can get tech support if you need it. The Zoom Room will open at 10:00am.

If you would like to be a greeter for a Zoom service, please contact Izzy Tappan-deFrees

Welcome to the
Watertown Mutual Aid Network,

funded by the Watertown Community Foundation in association with Wayside Youth & Family Support Network’s
Multi-Service Center.

Mutual aid is a way for Watertown neighbors to support each other, by delivering food, making weekly calls for social support, supporting each other with tutoring and technology, and in many other ways. By following this link https://bit.ly/2zqXKgH, you will find information about how to use mutual aid, forms to offer and request aid from your Watertown neighbors, and additional resources.

Please reach out to Sophia, our Community Coordinator, at Sophia_Suarez-Friedman@WaysideYouth.org or 617-744-9585 if you have any questions or wish to offer or request aid over the phone (translation services are available). We hope that this resource will bring our community together during this difficult time.
