Welcome to my first newsletter!

I’m Ali, the UK-based founder of Geg & Hen, which specialises in handmade to order linen clothing and accessories. My style ethos is simple: Slow Fashion. This involves buying better quality garments that will last for longer, therefore reducing waste to landfill.  I offer a viable, wearable alternative to the Fast Fashion of the High Street.

About Me

I was born in Cheshire but have lived in Yorkshire since the late 1990’s, and for the last seventeen years I have lived in a small market town near Sheffield. In my previous life I was a police officer but left my much loved job to care for my husband when he was diagnosed with Leukaemia. He passed away in 2018 and I had to decide what I was going to do next!

I was taught basic sewing and knitting skills by my mum but really got into it in earnest at school where I studied Art & Design. As a teenager I had very little money, so I used to make my own clothes, but even when I started work I still loved to browse the pattern books and fabrics in my local market and make my own outfits.

So it seemed the right path to follow to start my own clothing business. After reacquainting myself with my sewing skills Geg & Hen was born. And the name? When I first moved to Yorkshire I adopted two rescue cats called Greg and Henry. However my neighbours young daughter named them Geg and Hen.

Slow Fashion is an awareness and approach to fashion, which considers the processes and resources required to make clothing, particularly focusing on sustainability. It involves buying better-quality garments that will last for longer and values fair treatment of people, animals and the planet.

The term Slow Fashion came about quite organically. It was coined by Kate Fletcher of the Centre for Sustainable Fashion, following the phenomena of the Slow Food movement. As with the slow food movement, Fletcher saw a need for a slower pace in the fashion industry.

Slow Fashion opposes the Fast Fashion model that emerged around 20 years ago.  And it’s fair to say Slow Fashion is 100% necessary, with brands like H&M burning 12 tonnes of unsold garments per year in spite of its ongoing sustainability efforts to close the loop in fashion.*
