DALI Newsletter June 2020

Welcome to the June 2020 edition of the DALI Newsletter from DiiA. Despite the cancellation of face-to-face industry events, this has been a busy time for us. We have announced several important liaison agreements with the ZigBee Alliance, the Thread Group and Bluetooth SIG which all relate to DiiA's goal of building further standardization in the IoT lighting space. Among other news, we have also announced a webinar on June 24th in partnership with Lux Review.

Standardizing DALI lighting control with wireless networks

In the last few weeks, DiiA has announced several agreements with other industry organizations that will accelerate the adoption of IoT-enabled commercial lighting systems by creating specifications that bring together DALI lighting-control features and wireless networking. DiiA is working with these partners to develop suitable certification programs.

Two different approaches are being taken by DiiA and its partners. One option is to use an application gateway to translate between DALI and the wireless protocol of choice.

DiiA is working with the Zigbee Alliance to create specifications for DALI to Zigbee gateways, and is also working with Bluetooth SIG to specify a standardized Bluetooth mesh interface for DALI lighting devices.

The second option is to use an underlying wireless carrier to transport the DALI commands. DiiA

Liaisons launched

Thread Group
Thread Group and DiiA collaborate to shape the future of IoT lighting for commercial buildings

ZigBee Alliance

is working with the Thread Group to develop specifications for DALI over Thread networking. Since Thread is IP-based, this opens the possibility for a DALI over Thread network to communicate directly with other IP-based networks in a building.

DiiA is also developing specifications for DALI over Bluetooth mesh networking. Other wireless protocols, and other IP-based protocols (both wired and wireless) will be considered in the future.

Zhaga-D4i update presented at LpS Digital

A joint presentation from DiiA and Zhaga entitled “Zhaga-D4i interface standards for smart luminaires” is now available on the LpS Digital conference website.

The presentation by Dee Denteneer of Zhaga and Paul Drosihn of DiiA covers the key features of the Zhaga-D4i interface for both outdoor (Zhaga Book 18) and indoor (Book 20) luminaires. The first qualified Zhaga-D4i luminaires are already listed on the Zhaga website.

LpS Digital replaces the annual LED Professional Symposium, which normally takes place in September but has been cancelled in 2020.
