Sustainability Connections for Notre Dame's Staff
JUNE, 2020

I hope this finds you well.  While most of us continue to work remotely, I'd like to share with you a few sustainability announcements and fun ideas to do at home.

Please forward this to your office team members - as you see appropriate.

Take care,
Greg Koehler, Associate Program Manager, Office of Sustainability

Share Sustainability

Participate in our Green Ambassador community

We've experienced a nice growth in our Green Ambassador Google+ Community.  If you haven't done so yet - please join the community by clicking on this link.  The post below is an example of what we've seen in the first couple of weeks.  If that doesn't speak to you and your interests around sustainability... What does?  Share your ideas, your solutions, and information resources so that we can all better contribute to the University's goals.

Fun request: Post a photo of your home garden (veggies, fruit, flowers).  Make mention of anything you've tried for the first time in your garden while working from home.

Worm Tower in your Garden

From the Google+ Green Ambassadors Community

Judy Hygema (Department of Mathematics) set up a worm tower in her strawberry patch using a 5 gallon bucket. She drilled holes all around and on the bottom so they can go in and out throughout the raised bed. She mixes in all sorts of kitchen scraps (except meat), including crushed egg shells and coffee grounds, and some garden and yard waste. They return to the bucket to eat those things and they go out into the garden and enrich the soil with their castings. Here is the youtube video she used:

Procurement Partner Sustainability Award

Now Accepting Nominations

Our next Supplier Expo is scheduled for Fall, 2020, and the University of Notre Dame would like to award the second Procurement Partner Sustainability Award.  The selection committee is encouraging nominations for vendors that have helped advance sustainability initiatives on campus and those that have gone the extra mile to support ND during the COVID-19 crisis. Criteria for the award include: environmental impact, reach of influence, innovation, and commitment to efficiency.

The Office of Sustainability and Procurement Services encourages employees to continue working with suppliers on sustainability initiatives. Your efforts will be honored during the FY 2020 Supplier Expo.

To fulfill our commitment to fostering a culture of environmental responsibility, it is important that our faculty and staff communicate and are open to suppliers’ ideas to help drive innovation and identify new and sustainable offerings.

For more information, please visit our website. Questions can be sent to  green@nd.edu
Important: Deadline for nominations – September 1, 2020

Talk Sustainability

At your next office ZOOM meeting

Would you like me (Greg Koehler) to join your office's ZOOM meeting to talk about sustainability at Notre Dame? I've already done a couple - and they seem to be well received. Let me know by sending me an email (gkoehle2@nd.edu).  I'll get back with you to talk about a presentation/focus.

I'd be happy to talk with your team about Green Ambassadors, forming a Green Team, Green Office Certification and/or any other areas of interest.

My goal is to make sure there is at least one Green Ambassador in every office building and representing each department on campus.  And together, we can share ideas and solutions that will help the University reach its sustainability goals.
