Currents in the Stream

Please read the moving letter below from our Kansas Regional Ministers. I know that all of our hearts are heavy as we watch the daily news. Remember that the Disciples of Christ have made anti-racism a priority for the denomination. With God's help we can eradicate racism and love our neighbors as ourselves.
                                                                                          --Pastor Donna

In the past two weeks the ugly head of racist acts has once again shown itself and two men of African descent have lost their lives. The first simply because he was out jogging for exercise and it was assumed that he was a thief. The second by a law enforcement officer, who used excessive force detaining a man on a report of forgery, while three others stood by. Even when he complained, he could not breathe, the officer continued with his knee on the man’s neck for more than five minutes. By the time EMS arrived, the man was dead.
For far too long we have heard these stories on the evening news and have either excused the behavior of law enforcement or have shaken our heads in sadness and not spoken out when we needed to, or as loudly as we should have. In the Bible, we are told that, when we are confronted with evil, we are not to remain silent. Silence in the face of evil acts makes us complicit to the act and for this we must repent.

Today, this timidity stops. It is time we all stand up and say loudly “ENOUGH is ENOUGH!” As Bill Spangler-Dunning, Regional Minister of the Christian Church in Virginia, recently wrote, “racism in all its forms is evil and must be eradicated from this earth, if we, as members of the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) are to ever truly be a movement for wholeness in a FRAGMENTED WORLD!” And like our colleague Bill, we are “not OK with watching [our] black and brown Regional Minister friends who have to cry and suffer every time yet another person of color is killed and the world remains silent as if it does not matter.” Or for that matter, these same colleagues should not have to fear for their own lives every time they leave their homes to travel out to a congregation to help them find a new pastor, preach in a service of worship, or sit with a minister who has a loved one in a hospital and many other acts of ministry they do every day.

Steve, I, and the Kansas Anti-racism team implore you to add your voice to ours and join us in learning about and working to get rid of inequity in all aspects of our common life.

In Christ,
Ken Marston and Steve Martin
Co-Regional Ministers

Worship at the Church Building July 12

We look forward with excitement to meeting at the church for 10:30 a.m. worship on Sunday, July 12. (This could change, based on state and county recommendations. Check www.westsidedisiples.org for updates.)

When we do again have the joy of worshiping together in the building, please follow these safety guidelines:

  • Wear a mask. (If you don’t own a mask, new handmade-with-love fabric masks will be available at the door.*)
  • Offerings will be placed in baskets as you enter the church.
  • Ushers will seat you (families together) to allow for social distancing.
  • Communion will be handed to you by a gloved deacon as you leave the service.
  • One person at a time will use bathrooms, disinfecting before you exit.
Thank you for your understanding and help. Our desire is for you to feel safe and comfortable coming to worship, as well as to prevent virus spread.

*Please thank Carolyn Anderson, Kathy Marion, Mary Washburn and Susan White who have graciously made fabric masks for our congregation and our visitors.
Ladies, your sewing ministry has blessed, and continues to bless, so many in our church and community!

Topeka Rescue Mission Update
The following is an excerpt from the May 2020 Topeka Rescue Mission newsletter article "Into the Fire the Virus." To read the full article go to www.trmonline.org/files/May_20_Newsletter_Web.pdf

"We are having to face many new realities we have never faced before, from establishing priority shelter for only those in a five county radius, to providing in-house meals only for our guests and sack dinners and food boxes for the rest of the community.
"Even if you can’t be there on the front lines with us, you can stand in the fire with us. We pray for and value your support in whatever capacity you can give it - through donations, prayers, or following us on Facebook or our website to stay up to date with current news and needs. In the face of this new crisis, we remember that the homeless are still homeless, the hungry are still hungry, the broken are still broken, and you are still here at our side, with us in the fire."

When you pass through the waters, I will be with you; and when you pass through the rivers, they will not sweep over you. When you walk through the fire, you will not be burned; the flames will not set you ablaze. Isaiah 43:2 (NIV)
