Celebrating the life of Susie Simcock

Squash New Zealand joins the wider sporting community in celebrating the achievements of Susie Simcock who, following a short illness, passed away late last week.

Her significant contribution to squash in New Zealand and worldwide led to her acknowledgment as a Squash New Zealand life member in 1998 and her induction into the Squash New Zealand Hall Of Fame in 2010.

As a special way of recognising Susie’s outstanding and ongoing dedication to squash we would like to invite anyone who knew her to send us their tributes, stories, photos or memories. These will be collated into a gift from the wider squash community and passed on to her family; please send your contributions to jonathan@squashnz.co.nz

3am Squash at Silverdale

As the clock struck midnight and the date turned over to Thursday the 14th, the New Zealand covid-19 restrictions loosened as we moved down to Alert Level 2. While for many that meant they could go to the local Café, or go get their lockdown hair back under control at the hair dressers.

For Warren May and Sean Le Poidevin it meant a 3am trip to the Silverdale Squash club to be one of the first in New Zealand back on the court. When asked what drove them to go play squash at 3am they said “We talked about 1 minute past midnight but we came to our senses and decided 3am was more of a normal time” Warren was adamant they were both eager to go even if some of their squash skills may still be in lockdown. “I think we were both as keen as each other I may have put the idea into his head and it just went on from there It was some rough squash to start with and to be honest probably took a couple games to wake fully up “

Warren did try prepare for this epic showdown “I did a lot of walking and biking and even did a bit of ghosting on the back deck” now the preparations for the two of them will be the AD Long cup held in Dunedin on the 31st July – 2nd August.

What has Lockdown been like for Joelle?

Joelle has been keeping herself busy throughout the lockdown period learning to jete. “It’s so not me; I would never have dreamed of doing ballet. I’m not very graceful,” King laughs. “But I wanted to do something different that would stimulate my brain."
