PROTECT THE PITCH

Local heroes Lambeth Tigers football club normally train up to 200 young people a week at Myatt's Fields Park. They raised funds in 2019 from Nike for a complete renovation of our park pitch.

Since Covid-19 they have made the huge sacrifice of stopping training at Myatt’s. This has led to heartbreaking loss for the club and its members, including the opportunity for regular exercise for young people.

The coaches have been supporting their members with virtual daily morning exercise sessions and the club has also rallied round families with practical support when needed.

They are disappointed that the pitch risks being damaged by illegal use and worried about the safety of players who are climbing in to play.

David Marriott, club founder, said: "We raised the funds for the pitch to be renovated and now it is being damaged by people who are using it illegally. We are also worried about the safety of people who are climbing over the railings. Please can everyone help us make sure there is a pitch for young people to use many years into the future by waiting until it opens again before using it."
Little Cat Cafe re-opens
The cafe has reopened in the park selling drinks and snacks between 9am and 2pm Monday - Thursday and 9am to 5pm from Friday - Sunday. The park tennis courts are also open and you can book for £5 at https://www.myattsfieldspark.info/booking-form.html. Govt rules prohibit the council from replacing the basketball hoop and opening the football pitch and playground.
Bird spotting in the park
Local resident Philip has given us a run down of some birds in the park: these include goldfinches (pictured) in the tall trees, blue and great tits and wrens nesting at the edge of the park. Blackbirds and robins are still singing especially towards dusk.
House sparrows can be heard chirruping in thicker bushy patches (eg near the swings); parakeets seen and heard all over the park and starlings in groups on the ground. Philip says the pond is a great asset and many birds are relying on it for drinking water. He's heard a warbler (pictured) singing in the trees behind the pond for the first time this year.

Coronavirus – let's look out for each other

We hope you and your families are safe. Help protect our community and our park: please limit your visits to Myatt's to one hour maximum per day and maintain social distancing (2 metres apart from other park users). This allows more people to benefit from nature, prevents overcrowding and reduces risk of Covid-19 infection.
