Online community and resources are more important than ever, so we want to keep you up to date on how COVID-19 is impacting our members and community. We are also sharing stories about putting people and planet first; we hope this inspiration will help get you through these unsettling times.

HEAD START - What's happening now

Canada's failure to collect race-based pandemic data
One of this country's leading experts on the social causes of disease argues Canada's failure to collect race-based data on COVID-19 infections amounts to discrimination by neglect. "Discrimination is not necessarily about what you do. It's often about what you don't do," Dr. Kwame McKenzie said in an interview. Scarborough is one of the regions with a number of COVID-19 hotspots. It is also one of the most diverse and densely populated areas in the country.

Why it's important that we march
Supporters took to Christie Pits park Saturday afternoon to march for Regis Korchinski-Paquet, a 29-year-old woman who died after falling from the 24th-floor balcony of a Toronto apartment. "A lot of times when people call the police for mental health issues, it ends in death — and it shouldn't," said Latina McLean, a supporter at the rally. McLean pointed to better training for the Toronto Police as a solution because she says the police in this country are not equipped to handle mental health cases.

IT'S UP TO US - Change happens at CSI

The Black community in East York, Toronto, and across Ontario deserves increased, adequate access to timely, Black-led mental health supports. This Fund for Black-led Mental Health Supports is a place for non-Black people to tangibly put their outrage, sadness, shock, fear, anger and solidarity into action to actively support Black-led healing from the impacts of white supremacy through mental health supports for Black people. It will be held and administered by Black Registered Social Workers.
