Kia ora Kāpiti

How amazing was that long weekend, Kāpiti? Beautiful days to enjoy our stunning outdoors, and we still had some rain to keep our gardens happy.
We have a number of updates for you this week about what's going on around our district and communities. We're still at alert level 2 though, so keep that in mind in everything you do.
We know the drill, Kāpiti – wash your hands, be patient, be kind, and give people you don't know some space when you're out and about. You're doing great!

#LoveLocal #LoveKāpiti

Over the last few months our community has rallied to support the small businesses that help make Kāpiti such a great place to live. By buying local you’re strengthening our local economy, and supporting local jobs. Over the coming weeks, we’ll be sharing stories from our business community about how things are going.

Last week we popped in to see Johnnie and the team at NZ Proud Property Improvements for a chat about getting back to work, and why backing local will be such an important part of our district’s recovery.

If you’re a business, head over to the Love Local Kāpiti Coast Facebook group to let our community know a little bit about who you are and what you’re up to.

Plastic recycling changes on 1 July

From 1 July, Kāpiti Coast collectors and transfer stations will only accept plastics numbered 1, 2 and 5 for recycling. These make up most of the plastics used for packaging in New Zealand (87%), and include things like milk bottles and ice cream containers.

Plastics numbered 3, 4, 6 & 7 will no longer be accepted, because they cannot be recycled in New Zealand. Please put them in your general rubbish bin.

There are no changes to other types of recycling that will be collected, such as paper and cardboard, glass and cans.

To avoid unrecyclable plastics going to landfill, the best thing to do is to try and buy fewer of them, or reuse the containers at home. There’s information about how to do this on our website www.kapiticoast.govt.nz/waste, and ideas on how to reduce plastic waste on the Sort Waste website.

Entries open for Wellington Gold Awards

Entries for the Wellington Gold Awards are now open to all businesses, large and small, that make our region such a great place to call home. This year, the Awards will have a particular focus on the businesses that have innovated through COVID-19 and are contributing to our recovery and rebuild.

Special tributes are also given to deserving individuals and special projects or initiatives that have had a positive impact on the Wellington region.

Entries close on 2 July, so apply now!

Tohorā sneak peek!

We're excited to share this sneak peek of Tohorā, the new sculpture being installed at Te Uruhi/Maclean Park.

To be unveiled in a few weeks, Tohorā includes ambient lighting and sound effects to evoke the passage of whales, creating an aural and visual experience.

We can’t wait to see this finished public artwork at night! We love that it will add to our local sense of identity, and is an avenue to explore and understand the whakapapa and history of tangata whenua. As all public art does, it will also play a role in making our spaces enjoyable, and enhancing the environment for visitors.

Apply now for the Electra Business Awards!

The Electra Business & Innovation Awards 2020 are open for entries!

These awards celebrate best business practice across all industries and sectors in Kāpiti and Horowhenua, and this year will include a COVID-19 Innovation award.

Remember to register for one of the digital workshops on 4 and 10 June, and arm yourself with the knowledge to put your best entry forward for 2020!

Entries close 5 July – find out more at www.bkh.org.nz/entries-2020.

Kāpiti Gateway building passes first hurdle

Improving the Kāpiti Island departure point and providing an iconic visitor experience has been a discussion point for our community for many years. It was consulted on during the 2017 Maclean Park Te Ūruhi Development Plan.

Last week Council granted approval to apply to the Provincial Growth Fund (PGF) for 50% of the estimated cost associated of building a Gateway centre at the northern end of Maclean Park. If the Council’s PGF application is successful, the project will be a major boost for the Kāpiti Coast economy, providing local employment opportunities and much-needed economic stimulus to businesses in the surrounding area post COVID-19.

The funding application will be submitted within the next few weeks, and if it’s successful construction could start within six months of funding being approved.

Find out more about the project, and see more images, at Kāpiti Gateway Centre.
