Start your Career in Government with the Department of Finance

The Department of Finance have a number of entry-level programs including a Career Starter Program targeted at people who have completed a year 12 certificate or equivalent within the last 24 months (2019 or completing in 2020).
 
The Career Starter Program provides participants with the opportunity to become effective public servants, with formal training and development of skills and knowledge in a full-time APS Level 1 position. The program also provides continual support through various networking activities as a combined cohort.
 
At the successful completion of the program, Career Starters will obtain a Certificate IV in Government and have the opportunity to advance to the APS Level 2. Career Starters are engaged on a permanent ongoing basis by participating departments/agencies, with their salary to be paid in line with their department/agency’s Enterprise Agreement.

Apprenticeships
If you are interested in leaving school before the end of year 12 to begin an apprenticeship be sure to come see us to work out if you have the points to leave with a year 12 certificate or are old enough to leave without one and what the consequences might be for your future. There are some exciting full-time apprenticeships available below. We will update as and when ASbA opportunities become available again.

The above link will take you to a table which outlines the different CIT certificate courses and diplomas that are approved by universities in canberra and Charles Sturt as pathways to their specific degree. This is important reading for anyone thinking about trying an ASbA in their year 11 and 12 but dont want to close the door to a degree in the future. Also useful for any students who are worried that they are not going to get the ATAR they wanted or are taking an Accredited Package but now want to enter a profession which requires a degree. There is always a way!

UC CONNECT - Year 12 Student Information 

An alternative pathway to University of Canberra if your ATAR is going to be too low or you are sitting an Accredited Package.

UC Connect developed by UC College in conjunction with the University of Canberra (UC) provides a pathway for current Year 12 students and current school leavers who wish to study an undergraduate degree at the UC and whose current academic qualifications do not allow them direct admission to the University. You will study three preparation subjects that focus on the development of skills needed to successfully study at university: 
 
• Humanities - prepares you for the content, style and subject matter of academic teaching and thinking.
• Analytical methods - develops your analytical thinking skills and your competence in solving mathematical problems.
• Academic techniques - teaches the practical skills you need to comply with university standards and expectations.
• Numeracy and Digital Literacy – learn via a range of appropriate technologies to assist with your studies. 
 
Classes for UC Connect are held on Mondays and Fridays.  

Dates are as following: 
 
18 Week Program August 2020
• Orientation: Monday 27 July
• Classes commence: Monday, 3 August
• Classes conclude: Friday, 4 December   
 
IMPORTANT INFORMATION

• UC Connect is a commonwealth supported enabling pathway program. There are no tuition fees charged. Students must be Australian and New Zealand citizens or permanent residents of Australia. For more information visit studyassist.gov.au.  
 
Note: you will need to pay a Student Services and Amenities Fee (SSAF) of $310. 

Classes run on Mondays and Fridays between 9.00 am and 5.00 pm.
You attend four (4) to five (5) hours of classes on each of these days.
Additional time will need to be allocated to complete group and/or individual assignments on campus.

You will need to seek support from St Francis Xavier College.

UC 1 on 1 Interviews - 12th of June

If you are intending to go to or apply to UC you MUST try to get in to one of these SFX exclusive 1 on 1 interviews! UC have a lot of exciting new courses as well as scolarships and have fantastic connections with Canberra businesses and government for placements. Remember you can study a semester or even a year abroad with UC! These will fill up soon. Please go to the link below and book the time you want. You will then get an invite to join the meeting. These must be booked quick! If you can only get a slot that would require you to be out of class please come speak to the careers office first so that we can authorise it. Perhaps you and a friend are both planning on going with similar courses in mind. Book an appointment together! We have a space done at the careers office where you can have these meetings however if you wish to do it somewhere else please make sure that you are somewhere quiet and will not be disrupted.

Step 1; Students click on the one-on-one date, it will take them to the agreed date, with only that date being available to book in for consultations
Step 2; Students select a time that works for them
Step 3; Students fill in details
Step 4; Automated email is sent to student confirming booking with an individualised link for zoom the platform, including ‘add this to your calendar’ option
Step 5; Student adds consultation to their calendar
Step 6; On the day students go to calendar booking (set up from the automated email), link for meeting will be in this calendar invitation
Step 7; One-on-one consultation occurs with UC staff member who will be on the zoom link as well
