What I learned in lock down...

Adaptability is King but in times of crisis, it’s easy to get scared.  And let's face it, a global pandemic is a pretty big crisis! I think the biggest challenge for most, was the unknown factor - we didn't know much about this disease - information was patchy and contradicted itself – so much unknown. We humans don't like unknown!

To our reptilian brain, unknown equals life threatening and so we become fearful, even if we’re not someone who gets anxious easily. Fearful humans become unpredictable in their behaviour, which is why we saw the toilet paper hoarding. It’s funny now – but then hindsight is great, isn’t it?

I love the quote by Charles Darwin about the adaptability of humans. It reassures me, because although I may not want to adapt, I can. We all can, once we decide to do so.

As an introvert, I've enjoyed this time, despite some of it’s impacts. Less social interaction, more time to reflect and consider and plenty of time in my garden. My immediate family were at home, safe and well – one huge reassurance. A quieter clinic meant I’ve had more time to learn, to read and to garden. I’d already been working online for several years so the change to an online clinic was easier for me, than for others.

And I understand that many people have struggled. I'm working with clients each week to help them to adapt in many different ways.
  • For some, it’s to help them overcome their anxiety around Covid19.
  • For others, it’s to help them interrupt the comfort eating or to pull back on their alcohol consumption. Each of these behaviours were used as a coping mechanism, a type of comfort blanket that can easily become a set of very unhealthy habits.
  • Of course, physical symptoms continue to be present regardless of COVID-19. PMS, perimenopause, menopausal hot flushes, migraine, irritable bowel - all the usual suspects continue, regardless of any virus.
In fact, many are worsened because of the heightened anxiety. Many symptoms were ignored and really should not have been. Thankfully, as our world reemerges, people will pay attention again to their physical body and get medical advice for symptoms and treatment where appropriate.

If you would like help adapting to our new world, please get in touch to schedule an appointment. Because adapting is possible, even if you’re scared. All you need to do is begin.

"As a long time client of Ashleigh’s, I really didn’t think a video call would be as good as seeing her in person, but it really helped. Of course, it’s different to being in the room as her, but as always, I really felt heard, listened to and supported by Ashleigh. And I now know how to use WhatsApp video call! Thanks, Ashleigh, for encouraging me to give it a go – it really helped."
