My 3 Support Groups and Top 10 Self-Care Tips

Hi, again, clients, partners, collaborators, and friends. I hope this finds you safe and healthy.

As much as we’re reminded to practice self-care and seek support (which both reduce stress and inflammation), it’s even more challenging in this disturbing and volatile time. This is especially true for our elders and for caregivers.

You can still enjoy most of the suggestions above on the self-care reminders memo board, perhaps with modifications and at home. Unfortunately, a couple are not available or are restricted at this time.

Here are a few other tips:

• Eat nutritiously, and reduce sugar and alcohol

• Get quality sleep, 7-9 hours

• Listen to music

• Garden, or other outdoors activities

• Remain socially distant but connected by Zoom etc

• Call an old friend, maybe use Facetime

• Take a long bath perhaps with essential oils

• Join a virtual support group meeting

• Laugh! Keep your sense of humor by watching comedies, sharing jokes with friends by text, social media, etc.

Do you have your own self-care practices?

As I often discuss,14 years ago I started attending a support group soon after Katrina destroyed my mom’s home and exacerbated her emerging dementia symptoms. I got the support, suggestions, and relief from stress I needed to care for mom...and myself!

Today, it’s gratifying to help other family caregivers on their own journey with dementia.  I facilitate three groups, sub at others, and lead a memory café. Attendees regularly say that they learn something, and feel better and less stressed, every time. All groups currently meet virtually, accessible by videoconference or phone call (all times are Pacific):

  • My Alzheimer’s Association group meets each month on the 4th Tuesday at 7 - 8:30 PM.
  • My HOPE group meets each week. every Saturday at 11 AM - 12:30 PM.
  • My Facebook group meets each month on the 3rd Thursday at 5:30 - 7:00 PM

Please contact me for specific meeting information or for other support groups in your area. You won’t regret it.

Thanks again for joining my “virtual” support group. Please feel free to comment, ask questions, make suggestions, or even unsubscribe at any time.
