Mid-Week with Christ

June 5, 2020

Missionary Saints

1 Thess. 1:2-10

2 We give thanks to God always for all of you, constantly mentioning you in our prayers, 3 remembering before our God and Father your work of faith and labor of love and steadfastness of hope in our Lord Jesus Christ. 4 For we know, brothers loved by God, that he has chosen you, 5 because our gospel came to you not only in word, but also in power and in the Holy Spirit and with full conviction. You know what kind of men we proved to be among you for your sake. 6 And you became imitators of us and of the Lord, for you received the word in much affliction, with the joy of the Holy Spirit, 7 so that you became an example to all the believers in Macedonia and in Achaia. 8 For not only has the word of the Lord sounded forth from you in Macedonia and Achaia, but your faith in God has gone forth everywhere, so that we need not say anything. 9 For they themselves report concerning us the kind of reception we had among you, and how you turned to God from idols to serve the living and true God, 10 and to wait for his Son from heaven, whom he raised from the dead, Jesus who delivers us from the wrath to come.

Prayer for the Day

Without number are those, heavenly Father, whom You have filled with the Spirit of Your Son, and through whom You have caused His light to brightly shine. May we remember them in our thoughts and prayers, and encourage them in their faithful work, through Jesus Christ, our Lord. Amen.

Today is set aside in many Christians churches to the memory of Boniface of Mainz. He is one of the patron saints of Germany, an 8th century Anglo-Saxon pastor who proclaimed the Gospel to the people of the Frankish Empire. Boniface was a contemporary of Charles Martel, the Carolingian king who defeated the Islamic armies invading Europe in 732 AD. He strove to keep the Church from corruption after Martel was granted control over church lands as thanks for his military protection. Boniface was killed at the age of 79, along with several dozen others, by robbers in Frisia. He had gone there, as he had to so many others places in Europe, as a missionary for Jesus Christ.

I remember sitting around a table in a church basement decades ago and learning about Boniface from our Sunday School teacher, Laurie Storsater. He volunteered his time to teach our small group of middle schoolers Scripture and also, if my memory serves, the lives of Middle Age saints like Boniface. To this day I cannot think about the missionary of Mainz without thinking of Mr. Storsater and that time in Sunday School.

There are all sorts of people through whom the Lord proclaims the Gospel. Saints are not just ancient historical figures seen in black and white etchings on Wikipedia. They are also the Sunday School teachers who share time with young students so they can hear about Christ. They are the accountants who keep the church's books balanced. They are the deaconesses who teaches English and the Scriptures to new immigrants. They are the mothers and fathers who, after a long day at work, spend time helping with homework and praying through their kids' anxieties and worries.

The Lord works through every Christian to make them an example to other believers. We have been redeemed by the Son from heaven who was raised from the dead. Rejoice today in those through whom the Lord brought the Gospel to you.
