Welcome to this week's issue of The Birthday Workbook!
This week, we read a piece by Steven Chia, a presenter, senior editor at CNA, and proud father of two. His piece, about figuring out what's important in life and focusing on it sooner rather than later, is a useful perspective as we emerge from our national circuit breaker into Phase 1.

Read Steven's Essay
Here's a short clip from the movie Forrest Gump, which popularised the saying, "Life is like a box of chocolates. You never know what you're gonna get."
Consider the difference in how Steven and the movie use the analogy of life as a box of chocolates - which parts of these analogies do you relate to?
Now consider the following questions:
  1. The title of the piece is "I won't choose working late over spending time with my kids, because why would I?" Why do you think the writer ends with a rhetorical question?
  2. Can you think of some reasons why it might be difficult for some parents to balance work and spending time with their children? Make a list of occupations in which time or distance could play a major role.
  3. The author writes that parents "spend time on all these peripheral issues instead of focusing on the child himself". Why does he think parents do this?
  4. What does the author mean when he writes that "we've forgotten that people were made for living"?
  5. The author writes that "a child cannot differentiate between quality time and non-quantity time". Why do you think he believes this? Why does he emphasise it in his piece?
  6. What does the author mean when he writes that "we create pockets of time"? What is the effect of specifically using the word "pockets"?
  7. Do you believe that family must always come first? Why or why not? What else do you value in life?
