Dear Sister Pie friends and family,

We have spent the last two months running a no-contact grocery pick-up service for our neighborhood, packing up over 100 orders a week. Thanks to a PPP loan and plenty of help from our community, we are feeling cautiously ready to move forward into a new version of Sister Pie...for now, and for however long it makes sense.

At the same time, we're distracted and filled with sorrow, anger, and a heavy, grieving heart for black lives lost. We can't and won't forget the way this moment intersects with COVID-19 and the deep, sustained injustice in our country. We must strive to work daily at being a better, more active anti-racist individuals and business leaders.

We are working to permanently building the following resources into our website for but we're eager and motivated to share them with you immediately. Here is how you can join us in leaping into action starting today:
  • Please call 313-224-3400 and demand the safe release of Tristan Armond Taylor, who was taken into custody last night after a peaceful protest. He was treated roughly by the police and has been charged with "inciting a riot." Tristan is a grassroots community organizer, active member of the Charlevoix Villages Association, employee at Avalon Bakery, and a friend of ours. We know many folks who are very worried about his safety, us included.
  • The Metro-Detroit Political Action Network is organizing a protest at the Mayor's house tonight at 6pm. There's also a 4pm protest at Michigan and 3rd (DPD).
  • Please consider donating to the GoFundMe for the Detroit bail fund or the Michigan Solidarity Bail Fund.
  • There are many ways to support Detroit Justice Center and the incredible work they do right here in the city. They were originally slated to be our partner organization for the year, then things took a turn with COVID-19 and our work together was put on pause. Now, we're back at it, and developing a cookie recipe that will send all proceeds back to them. Stay tuned.
  • Here's a Google document with a list of black-owned businesses to support (now and always).
  • For furthering and growing the education of white folks, we're building up a book list for a virtual reading group. Many popular titles are in high demand right now so it might take some time for Source Booksellers get them in stock. In the meantime, visit their libro.fm page where you can purchase the audiobook and Source still gets a cut!
  • We will be donating all sales from our Salted Maple pies this Friday and Saturday to the Michigan Solidarity Bail Fund. Orders for those and other baked goods are available at sisterpie.com/shop. You'll notice that our prices are different -- this is because we are moving into a no-tipping model. To account for the additional 8-10% average extra earnings our employees made from cash/credit card trips, we are raising their wages and our prices by 10%. More on our pricing structure and more grocery options to come!
