RESISTANCE!
LEARNING FROM AFRICAN HISTORY

The struggle for racial justice unfurling across the nation and the globe is the continuation of longstanding resistance to slavery and colonialism on the continent. African history has much to teach us in this continued struggle against the roots of modern racism. Following are key resources on anti-colonial resistance, to consider in our teaching and in our lives as we reflect on how to act toward justice:

Anti-Colonial Struggles

Colonialism is often taught as the "scramble for Africa," a Eurocentric perspective that, at the outset from its title, takes the perspective of Europeans and in the process, erases the countless tactics Africans used to resist and rebel against the invading powers. In most places, Africans tried diplomatic negotiation before resorting to more active and righteous resistance. How, then, to teach African rebellion against European powers in ways that reinvest agency, humanity, and dignity into the narratives our students learn? Gather ideas for activities, foundational concepts, mapping tools, and texts from our Colonialism and Resistance page.
