2020 National Convention

A tad of silver lining: this year—on Friday and Saturday, June 25th and 26th--the LWVUS Convention will be held virtually—the 54th biennial convention and the 1st virtual.  As a result, the plenary sessions and some caucuses will be open to observers at no cost.  For more information and to register: LWV National Convention 2020 | League of Women Voterswww.lwv.org › 2020convention

Registration for delegates and observers closes at 5pm ET on Monday, June 15. Information on how to register is available here. Delegates will receive information on how to complete their registration on Zoom, and observers will receive information on how to view plenary live on Youtube.

The Republican second primary in the 11th Congressional District is June 23rd.  All three voting options—-absentee by-mail, in-person early voting and in-person voting on Election Day – will be available to eligible Republican and unaffiliated voters who chose to vote with a Republican ballot in the March primary. One Stop voting will be from June 4 – 19 (M-F) during normal business hours at the Henderson County Board of Elections. On Saturday, June 20, voting will be from 8:30 – 3:00.  Significant safeguards for voters and poll workers have been implemented. There’s a link to the list of all safeguards on the BOE website. If you vote in person, please tell us about your experience at voterservices@lwvhcnc.org. Your responses will help plan for a safe and accessible election in the fall.

ERA

Alert from Nancy Glowacki, ERA Team Leader and ERA-NC Alliance Liaison.

In spite of the pandemic, the Ratify ERA-NC Alliance has been at work. At the state level, we ask all advocates to participate in any local political forums (likely all virtual these days) and publicly ask candidates if they support the Equal Rights Amendment and notify us of their responses.  After all NC primary elections, we will send a survey to General Assembly candidates asking their position on the ERA and sharing those results this summer. Currently, we do not know whether the NC General Assembly will introduce many non-COVID-19 bills, but it is possible that the ERA ratification bill will be introduced in July or August. We will keep you posted on any developments.
Meanwhile, at the national level, we are pushing the US Senate to pass Senate Joint Resolution 6 (SJR6) to eliminate the deadline for the ERA. Below is the action alert that we ask you to get out to everyone in your network.  (The House already passed this bill.)   We had a Skype call with Senator Thom Tillis’ office recently to urge his support and are working to get one with Burr’s office.  Letters and calls are urgently needed from North Carolina residentsSEE BELOW!
