We’ve had a lot of internal discussion about whether or not there should be a newsletter from We All Count this week. We believe in transparency, especially in communication, so we wanted to let you in on our thoughts.

Thought 1: We don’t like when companies or organisations leverage this outrage and action in the U.S. for their own branding. We’ve already had emails like that in our inboxes and it makes us want to not send anything. We want to give space to the on-the-ground leaders, to the eloquent writers of color, and to every activist marching in the streets.

Thought 2: Maybe this is exactly the time we should continue to send the newsletter. Data science is being used as a tool of oppression, racism, and in support of the status quo. Data can reinforce problems but can also offer solutions. We are proud to be part of the call for change being demanded by the Black community and their allies.

So:

Usually, we send you a new article about Data Equity, opportunities and resources for training, and some shining examples of data equity advocates, projects and writing. This week, we want to show respect for the history being made by the people in the streets and make practical engagement our data equity work. After this week, we’ll be resuming our normal publishing schedule to continue the push for equitable data science as one front in the fight towards universal equity.

Thank you,
The We All Count Team
