39th Ward Newsletter

June 5, 2020
Dear neighbor,

I hope this finds you and your loved ones healthy and well.

As the City of Chicago enters "Phase III: Cautiously Reopen," please remember to continue to practice social distancing and wear a mask when in public spaces.

The Chicago Citywide Curfew is still in effect from 9 p.m. - 6 a.m. and will remain in effect until further notice.

I know many of you are looking for ways to help in this important moment. My office is partnering with Aldermen from across the City to offer our assistance. To learn more, see below.

If you are a private attorney and are willing to volunteer your time for a person in need of representation from the events of the past week, please email Era Laudermilk at Era.Laudermilk@CookCountyIL.Gov.

This week, Mayor Lightfoot gave her State of the City Address. She announced the implementation of police accountability reforms that are mandated by the consent decree. These reforms include:
  • Improved training for officers, including residents providing community histories and neighborhood tours to new recruits;
  • Improving officer mental health programs, including the enhancement of crisis support, and providing counselors for officers;
  • Mandating crisis intervention training and procedural justice training for all officers.
I am continuing to meet with community groups, organizers, neighbors, and fellow elected officials to discuss the proposed policies regarding police accountability.

As always, our office is here to serve the residents of the 39th Ward. We are currently open seven days a week to assist you during this unprecedented time. Should you need any assistance, please call the office at 773.736.5594 or email Ward39@CityofChicago.Org.

Very truly yours,

Alderman Samantha Nugent
