A message to parents and guardians from Eugene School District 4J

No-School Days This Week & Next

Furlough days will save funds to offset cuts next school year

4J schools have two days this week and next when school staff will not be working and teachers will not be available to connect with students.

  • Thursday, June 4: No-teacher day for elementary (grading/transition day)
  • Friday, June 5: No-teacher day for all students (furlough day)
  • Wednesday, June 10: Last day of school (instead of June 11)

These two furlough days for 4J staff will save the district about $1 million to help protect school days and staff positions next school year, when there will be budget impacts from the pandemic.

Thank you for your understanding. Our goals in Eugene School District 4J are to weather the economic downturn and, to the extent possible:
  • Maintain class sizes
  • Minimize layoffs
  • Preserve a full school year next year

Student Meal Sites Open Monday–Thursday

Starting this week extra meals available to take home on Thursdays

Starting the week of June 1, grab-and-go student meals are being served Monday through Thursday, with extra meals available to take home on Thursdays.

This schedule will continue through the summer, at a more limited number of sites starting June 15 after the school year ends. The summer student meal program will be similar to the current free meal program that has been provided while school buildings are closed due to the pandemic.

Now and through the summer, free to-go meals are available for all youth 18 years old and younger. Families can choose the location that is most convenient for them, regardless of where they live or attend school. Students do not need to be present when picking up meals and there are no income requirements.

Eugene Online Academy Enrolling All Grades

4J’s online learning program open to K–12 students in 2020–21

Is online learning the right fit for your student? The Eugene Online Academy is now enrolling students in all grades for the 2020–21 school year.

Eugene Online Academy is a K–12 learning program offered by Eugene School District 4J that combines technology with individual support from 4J teachers to offer students an alternative to a traditional classroom setting. The program currently serves students in grades 6–12, and will expand to elementary students next year.

Students learn in a self-paced manner that is flexible and customized to their individual needs, interests and schedules. Students also are able to take in-person classes and participate in extracurricular activities at their neighborhood school.

Interested in enrolling? Please contact your 4J school to apply for the program. After June 11, or for a student who is not currently enrolled in a 4J school, please email eugeneonline@4j.lane.edu or call 541-790-7545.

Athletics Still On Pause, Facility Work Goes On

No group practices, but coaches may connect with students remotely

The weather has turned and youth and adults are looking to be active outdoors. Playgrounds remain closed, but tracks, fields and now tennis courts can be used by individuals with physical distancing. 4J school facilities remain off-limits for group activities including use by outside groups (except for specific essential services).

Oregon school athletics and activities were canceled this spring for the rest of the 2019–20 school year. Plans for 2020 fall sports are yet to be determined.

No sports team practices are permitted at this time. However, after school ends, coaches may check in with students and may discuss optional individual workouts and activities, adhering to all current parameters for physical distancing and other considerations that are in effect for Oregon schools and our local community.

In the meantime, while student athletes are not on the fields, planned high-priority improvements are underway for athletic facilities across the district—including turf replacements, gym floor work, and a new North Eugene softball field—among a long list of planned bond improvements for this spring and summer.
