The library is using Beanstack to log reading and activities for Summer Reading 2020 just as we did for the Spring Reading Challenge. Everyone will need to sign up for a Beanstack account to win prizes. You can sign up online at www.santacruzpl.org/srp or call
831-427-7713.
We will also have paper logs for everyone who wants one.
Teachers, please remind parents to encourage their kids to read this summer and to participate in the libraries' Summer Reading Program. Then you can reward your students when school starts up again by asking them about their summer reading experience. It's a small thing, but even a high 5 from you when they show you that they kept track of reading during the summer means a lot to the child.
The library may not have all these titles in our collection or at your favorite branch, but we are accepting requests again so you will be able to request the titles that you are of most interest to you.
Tales to Tails goes virtual to create a fun, neutral, and accessible reading experience. Bring some books, a stuffed animal or your own pet, and come read with us! This is a YouTube livestream event so you might be reading to up to six animals at once. Woo hoo!
Caregivers - You can post your child’s first name and city in the YouTube comments, along with the book they are reading, and we’ll read off as many of those names as we can, live, during the break we need to give the dogs.
Each week you register we’ll send you a printable dog bone and activity. These are dated dog bones your child can color and email to us. The following week, we’ll display them live on our feed.
This event is recorded so if you can’t make it live, the dogs are there for you anytime.
ALSC (Association for Library Service to Children) Summer Reading Booklists
Every year ALSC prepares lists of great books for children. This year's lists should be particularly helpful in choosing age and reading level appropriate books to engage young people and help prevent summer slide. Titles on the 2020 Summer Reading Lists were compiled and annotated by members of ALSC’s Quicklists Consulting Committee. ALSC booklists are created as a resource for children's librarians to share with patrons. Parents and caregivers are encouraged to explore these titles to find resources that may match or spark their child's interest.
This summer you will be able to earn entries in the Summer Reading Drawing by completing challenges. One of the Challenges is to create an art project. The library will be creating 2 virtual quilts - one for adults and one for kids - from art projects submitted. You might want to submit your art project to be part of the virtual quilt or you might want to just create art. It's up to you.
Curbside Pickup
Curbside Pickup began May 18 at Scotts Valley, Aptos and Downtown. Curbside pickup will be expanded to Live Oak and Felton on June 9. In addition, the library is now accepting online requests!

The Tumble Book Library is an online collection of animated, talking picture books which teach kids the joy of reading in a format they'll love. TumbleBooks are created by taking existing picture books, adding animation, sound, music and narration to produce an electronic picture book which you can read, or have read to you. Also included are games and puzzles. TumbleBooks are created in flash animation. You will need the Flash plug-in for your browser and a computer set up for sound. Santa Cruz Public Libraries subscribe to Tumblebooks and you can find the link on our Kids Page here.
For a limited time - until August 31, 2020 - you can also access other products from the Tumble Book Library by clicking on the link to Find Books and Movies and then clicking on the far right Tumblebooks tab:
