1. CRISIS RESPONSE NETWORK (CRN)

The Crisis Response Network (CRN) aims to coordinate a network of Christian partners for a strategic, compassionate and sustainable response to crises (man-made or natural), before, during and after a crisis to alleviate the suffering of people from any background. Our main focus will be on readiness before a crisis, response during the crisis and restoration efforts after a crisis.

Our mandate comes from Matt 25: 35,36 and 41: “For I was hungry and you gave me something to eat, I was thirsty and you gave me something to drink, I was a stranger and you invited me in, 36 I needed clothes and you clothed me, I was sick and you looked after me, I was in prison and you came to visit me. Truly I tell you, whatever you did for one of the least of these brothers and sisters of mine, you did for me.”

The CRN is not a traditional first responder. We will rely on and coordinate our Christian network partners and channel a response through their local representatives/or through the footprint they have in a given location to prepare, respond and restore that particular community. Any response will be coordinated through these local actors/indigenous role-players/ believers, whether it is the local church, or workers. The reason for this approach is twofold:
  • These local role-players already know the area they live in, speak the language and have existing relationships and networks. This strategy enables a demand-driven response and allows the local role-players to strengthen relationships without too much foreign influence and allows for continuous restoration long after the crisis has abated, and other NGOs have departed. The alleviation of suffering thus becomes a ministry opportunity for these local workers so that they can ‘own’ the response, and for it to lead to the extension of His Kingdom and for His glory.
  • Partnership is key for us because we believe organisations have both unique capabilities, but also limitations.  We believe that enhanced collaboration between Christian ministries should take place- the body is called to function as a unity and be the hands and feet of Jesus to a world in need. We know that as long as we dwell on this earth, natural disasters and crises will always be a part of it, and we as the body of Christ will be able to make a bigger impact addressing it, if we work together. We don’t want to alter ministry strategies, but want to see greater coordination between ministries in a time of crisis through this network of partners.
The CRN does not see itself as the first responders, but aim to serve as a conduit for the capabilities of the various network partners in order to make available each other's resources and knowledge to serve the cause. This will increase access to available resources, result in a more effective response and enhance ministry opportunities. In a nutshell then, the CRN aims to connect His resources, with His people for His plan.

We therefore invite organisations who would like to form part of this network, to visit our website at www.crisisresponsenetwork.net and go to the Get Involved Page, where Partnership Registration Forms are available. (Membership is free and participation is always voluntary.)

Apart from this vision the CRN will also serve the faith-based community and organisations with regards to security challenges your organisation, and/or your workers in the field, may experience. We aim to achieve this by making training materials and resources available, to better equip and prepare you to face whatever crisis may come your way.

3. TRAUMA HEALING NETWORK

WHO ARE WE?
The Trauma Healing Network was launched in September 2012 as a Bible-engagement project of the Bible Society of Namibia which focuses on the community. We focus on traumatised people, with the aim to bring healing and to equip them to dealing with trauma that might touch their lives in future. Although the Bible does play a large role in this process, we include all people with trauma and do not focus exclusively on the trauma of Christians.

WHY DO WE EXIST?
Research has found that adults and children are generally not well equipped to effectively deal with traumatic experiences in their lives. They are not equipped from childhood with the necessary coping skills to process trauma and being able to carry on with their lives after traumatic experiences. As a result the effects of trauma influences their daily lives at home, work, school and especially in relationships.

WHAT DO WE OFFER?
Most important to us is to cultivate a community which is not only able to handle their own trauma effectively, but which can also form a mutual support base.

Our main focus is on Healing Retreats (a weekend experience) which help adults to go through a healing process from a biblical perspective, and, hereby, teaching them necessary resilience skills to be able to handle their trauma more effectively. Our Trauma Healing Camps for children between 9 and 14 are spread over 5 days, helping children to deal with their heart wounds in creative ways.

To make this possible, we offer the following trainings: a 5-day Healing Retreat Training to equip those who would like to help and support others, as facilitators in our Healing Retreat program; and a 5-day training for facilitators of our Trauma Healing Camps for children.
Our trainings are participatory and experiencial in nature, as well as practical and creative. We are working with specific colours to help people to engage with the content.

The trainings help facilitators to understand groupwork; but it is also possible to add individual trauma counselling and grieving skills which will extend the training with 2 to 3 more days. It is also possible to have a 3-day training which focusses only on the building of resilience.

The following criteria apply for being trained:
  • • Literacy in English
  • • Involvement in the community
  • • Love and empathy for people with emotional pain
  • • The ability to effectively lead/ teach/ communicate in a group
  • • Have leadership characteristics to be able to work with people
  • • Be emotionally mature
