EORNA News - June 2020

A Word from the President

Since the 1950s, operating room nurses around the world have been supporting each other. In several countries, national groups of nurses started to found theatres for professional development and organise annual congresses. Since then, European operating room nurses have been able to exchange ideas and knowledge about perioperative care at international congresses, and soon discovered that all were facing the same problems in operating theatres.

The first European Day for Operating Room Nurses took place at the same time as the 1982 Annual Congress of the Operating Room Nurses of Great Britain (NATN) and it was a great success. This informal European group has continued to meet and worked to create a well-organised association, with a meeting held in Copenhagen in April 1992 as a crucial turning point: seventeen countries decided to formalise the European group and the official name of the group emerged: "European Operating Room Nurses Association" - EORNA - with its headquarters in Brussels and English as the official language.

EORNA has several objectives including leveraging the voices of perioperative nurses and encouraging and supporting research in perioperative nursing. Currently, the document "EORNA recommendation for Perioperative Practice - Second Edition" is being developed by the EORNA Perioperative Nursing Care Committee and it will be posted on the EORNA Website in due course. My special thanks to the Committee members and all those who are making this project a reality.

The year 2020 is the Year of the Nurse and Midwife (YONM), in honour of the 200th anniversary of the birth of Florence Nightingale (1820-1910), considered the founder of modern nursing. We are proud to be perioperative nurses and we will continue working together to enhance perioperative nursing in Europe. I would like to invite you to join the Global Campaign Nursing Now. The campaign is a programme of the Burdett Trust for Nursing and is run in collaboration with the World Health Organization and International Council of Nurses.

This year is also special because all nurses have been, and still are, on the frontline fighting the COVID-19 pandemic. The organisation of operating theatres has been affected and many perioperative nurses are helping their colleagues in intensive care units. Within this context, EORNA’s COVID-19 Forum has been set up to create a space for discussion. A huge thank you, and our enduring support, goes out to all the nurses and caregivers working in these challenging situations.

The 10th EORNA Congress will take place on May 27-30, 2021 in Stavanger, Norway. Don't miss the opportunity to share your experience with colleagues from more than 40 countries. Save the date!

Yours sincerely,
May Karam
EORNA President

EORNA Board Meeting

Despite the pandemic and this challenging time for all caregivers and operating room nurses, the EORNA Board has stayed in touch.  We have organised virtual meetings to continue working together on the development of perioperative care. We look forward to resuming our face-to-face meetings, but thanks to technology, we can meet virtually and continue our work together.

Thank you to all nurses on the front lines fighting COVID-19.  We are in this together.

AFISO COVID-19 News

In the light of the COVID-19 crisis, two new Royal Decrees were issued to address the shortage of nurses in some healthcare institutions in Belgium. These Extraordinary Royal Decrees were limited in time and specifically related to the COVID-19 crisis.

The first Royal Decree allowed the requisition of healthcare personnel in the event of a shortage. The second Royal Decree allowed, temporarily, unqualified healthcare professionals (e.g. dentists, physiotherapists) to practice nursing.

The Belgian nursing world, professional associations and trade unions reacted strongly to the publication of these Royal Decrees, arguing that there had been no consultation in the drafting of these Royal Decrees. In addition during the crisis, there was mutual assistance between departments in order to strengthen the services handling COVID patients. Thus, many operating room nurses have been assisting in the intensive care or other COVID units. The nursing world did not see the need to requisition staff, while the caregivers showed great solidarity among themselves while, in some hospitals, nurses went on technical unemployment.

IPNA: COVID-19 in Israel

In Israel we started to deal with the COVID-19 at the beginning of March. The Ministry of Health built a special department outside the "SHEBA" Hospital in Tel Aviv. On March 15, the government closed the borders. Only a few flights could land, and all the passengers were required to be isolated for 14 days, first at home but later in "CORONA Hotels" managed by the IDF. The government subsequently decided to have a COVID-19 department in every hospital. Doctors, nurses, technicians, and other staff were trained and were working only in those departments. Banks, supermarkets, and other important workplaces kept running.

The main problem of the medical services was the lack of information, confusing messages, lack of protective equipment and fear stemming from the high number of patients who need intubation and intensive care. Two major issues were the reduced number of tests for COVID-19 and staff contamination. Most of the hospitals stopped the elective surgeries and operated only on emergency patients. In this scenario, many questions were raised in the OR about the consequences of operating on patients with COVID-19. As a result, the operating room departments decided to allocate a room to treat COVID-19 patients following strict guidelines for cleaning and patient transfers. The operating room staff worked together and worked 12-hour shifts.
