Update for volunteer coordinators

Dear <<First Name>>:

I hope you are all staying safe and enjoying the sunshine where possible.

It's Volunteers’ Week 2020! I would like to take this opportunity to say a heart-felt thank you to each and every one of you for your role in leading our volunteer teams this winter. We simply couldn’t deliver our services without you and your incredible volunteer team providing support to people experiencing homelessness. I want to say thank you to the rest of the team too, so I have sent a separate thank you email to volunteers who opted to receive communications from us.

In celebration of all you have achieved this year, we have put together photos from the shelter season which you can view and download here.

We would love to feature even more of your photos, especially from shelters for which we don’t yet have a photo in our album. Please send any additional photos to our communications officer Rachael (rachael@glassdoor.org.uk). Also tune into our Instagram (@glassdoorlondon) as a different volunteer will take over our channel each day of this week. If you would like to be involved in a future Instagram takeover then please let Rachael know.

Volunteering officer vacancy: I also wanted to share with you that we are now recruiting for a new volunteering officer to improve how we use volunteers’ experience and skills in our services and fundraising. Once the successful candidate is in post, you can expect to hear from them regularly as your key point of contact at Glass Door. Please do share this vacancy with your networks.

Meanwhile, our vital casework and fundraising efforts continue. See below for updates.

Casework and shelter updates:

From caseworker Aga: I have been guiding several guests through their EU Settlement Scheme applications. Successful applicants are then eligible to access public funds such as rental support. Being granted “settled status” can be a life-changer for guests.

From caseworker Lewis: I helped three people get new jobs with accommodation included. I arranged for hotel accommodation to be provided for someone who had been assaulted after two local authorities declined to assist him.

From caseworker Jasmiina: A couple who used to be in the shelter and who have been staying in a hotel paid for by Hammersmith and Fulham Council have now found a permanent place to live. I have helped another guest to access Universal Credit and another is viewing a property via Hope Worldwide. I applied for a local support payment for a guest who was housed in March and they have delivered him furniture now, which is great.

Other news:

Dame Helen Mirren backs appeal:  Dame Helen Mirren has chosen to support Glass Door's COVID-19 Emergency Appeal. She stars in our Appeal film alongside staff and volunteers from the charity. Watch the film.

Glass Door in the news: Glass Door staff voiced their concern about the lack of move-on options for guests in hotels in the press last week. Comments from caseworker Alex and COO Lucy feature in the Guardian and the Evening Standard. Read the coverage.

Mayoral charity of the year: The new Mayor of RBKC Councillor Gerard Hargreaves has chosen Glass Door as his charity of the year. Watch the video announcement and read the story.

New guest story: Lisa developed a chronic illness at 21 which made it difficult for her to work. She began staying in Glass Door night shelters and is now being supported to self-isolate in a hotel. Read Lisa’s story.

Fundraising superstar: Nic Fox has raised over £5,000 for Glass Door by travelling the length of Britain during lockdown. Has he broken lockdown rules? Not at all, he has cycled or walked within the permitted exercise regulations every day. He reached the 800mile mark this week – not long to go now Nic! Follow Nic’s journey.
