New Voices Student Leadership Institute Application Deadline, June 5

Do you know a high school student ready to take on a larger role in the New Voices movement? Have them apply for the first ever New Voices Student Leaders Institute, July 6-9, 2020.

Participation in the all-online Institute is free, but students will commit to serve as student leaders in the New Voices movement during the 2020-2021 advocacy year. Participants will be joined by SPLC staff, New Voices advocates, and special guests to learn their unique capacity as change agents, deepen their understanding of civics, advocacy and press freedom, and expand their ability to act as organizers and messengers for causes that matter to them. By the end of the Institute, Student Leaders will have a student outreach strategy for the 2020-2021 year, including a completed social media campaign ready for release. Student leaders will also receive a certificate of participation, and ongoing training and leadership opportunities throughout the year.

To attend, students must be a rising high school sophomore, junior, or senior student in a state with an active New Voices campaign, who has demonstrated previous interest in the New Voices movement. Applications are due June 5, and must include an adviser or advocate recommendation. More information is available here.

High School Journalism Budget Advocacy Toolkit, Available Now

School districts are making difficult financial decisions, but COVID-19 should not mean the end of student media at your school. The SPLC’s High School Budget Advocacy Toolkit is here to help advisers, students and parents push back against debilitating proposals and changes to your program. Check out the toolkit here.

If you suspect your program is being targeted, in whole or in part, because of the content of past, present or future student media coverage, contact SPLC’s free legal hotline immediately. Content-based financial decisions are censorship, and our attorneys may be able to help.

Welcome 2020 Nicholas Ferentinos New Voices Fellow: Katy Temple

SPLC is thrilled to welcome Katy Temple as our 2020 Nicholas Ferentinos New Voices Fellow for the summer. Katy is a student at Columbia University studying political science, and plans on pursuing graduate school at Columbia as well. She was previously the Editor-in-Chief of The Torch, the student newspaper at Bergen Community College, where she graduated with an associate’s degree in journalism. Katy has been involved with the New Voices movement in New Jersey for more than a year and is looking forward to diving in to support campaigns in other states along with continuing the fight in New Jersey.

The Nicholas Ferentinos New Voices Fellows Program is named for Nicholas Ferentinos, a renowned journalism adviser who died in 2016. Ferentinos taught English and speech at Homestead High School in Cupertino, Calif. from 1965 to 2000 and was faculty adviser for The Epitaph from 1976 to 1994. The Epitaph was the 1988 recipient of the SPLC’s Courage in Student Journalism Award, in recognition of the paper’s tenacity in telling the story of an HIV-positive student despite efforts by the principal to quash the story in the immediate wake of the Hazelwood decision. The program was established in 2019 thanks to the Sandler Foundation, to enable students to work as grassroots peer organizers and trainers and help the New Voices movement grow and gain momentum.
