It's Not Time Yet
May 29, 2020

To date, over 100,000 people have died from COVID 19. The national landscape further divided this week with the killing of George Floyd and the Christian Cooper video in Central Park. While the aftermath of Ahmad Aubrey still looms over us we're trying to make sense of it all. It's been a terrible week and a rough year. How much longer will we have to stay at home, avoid contact with people, or be limited in our public outings? How much longer will our nation be divided by politics, class, and race?  When will things get better?

When we think about God's timing we most often think of it in terms of the hopes and dreams we have. We're waiting on a new job, a new home, a new love.  Rarely are we focused on God's timing in times of trial and turmoil.  This is our focus for the week.
SCRIPTURE
"So although Jesus loved Martha, Mary, and Lazarus, he stayed where he was for the next two days."
John 11:5
PRAYER
Almighty God, help us to remember that you are always with us. Give us strength and endurance while we wait for you. Amen!
When, God, When?!!! It's an honest question and a valid one. When we are in pain, discomfort or chaos we want to know when it will end. The short answer....

When Jesus shows up.

The longer answer....

I don't mean when Jesus comes back down from Heaven in the clouds. I don't think we're there yet.  Jesus shows up when the people of God— those who claim to be Bible believing Christians—  allow their hearts, minds, and actions to align with God's way of doing things.

As always, The Bible helps us better understand who God is and how He moves.  Here's what we need to remember...

Timing Matters to God.

This is what Jesus shows us in John 11:5.  Lazarus was sick and his sisters came to Jesus to heal him. Jesus assured them that Lazarus wouldn't die. He tells them in verse 4 that this happened "...for the glory of God so that the son of God will receive glory from this."

Jesus waited two days until Lazarus was a buried. That's when Jesus brought Lazarus back to life.  Raising Lazarus from the dead gave God more glory than simply healing his sickness. After seeing Lazarus walk out of that tomb, people believed that Jesus was indeed the Son of God.  John 11:45 says, "Many of the people who were with Mary believed in Jesus when they saw this happen."

God's Timing Produces More

One of my favorite scriptures is Malachi 3:11.  I know most people stop at verse 10 on tithing but verse 11 makes me leap for joy.  "Your crops will be abundant, for I will guard them from insects and disease. Your grapes will not fall from the vine before they are ripe."   I learned two things from this...

God's timing produces maturity so that we reap the greatest harvest. The longer we wait on God the greater the impact when God shows up. The longer we stay connected to the vine, the healthier and more abundant we become. (Like the grapes) Let God spiritually mature you and prepare you for all that he wants to do in your life. Don't rush it. Don't "fall off" before the harvest.

God promises to protect us while we wait in obedience to Him.  The Old Testament law required the Jewish people to give a tenth of all of their crops and animals as acknowledgement that everything belongs to God and he is our Provider.  New Testament living requires us to be faithful in cheerful giving and love, forgiveness, kindness, etc., to honor God in all things.   If we stick with God and do things His way, we'll have spiritual riches...and some "stuff" too.

There's a Time For Everything

Before you start thinking that if you obey God nothing bad will happen to you, let's take a look at John 16:33. This scripture passage has been foundational to my maturity in Christ. It has allowed old wounds to heal and gives me hope in times like the present.

"Here on earth you will have many trials and sorrows. But take heart, because I have overcome the world."

Jesus never promised us a life without COVID 19, racism, or personal troubles.  He promised us that His death overcame all of these things and made us victorious.

And so...

With all that has happened in 2020 I continue to take heart. Like Martha and Mary....I'll just wait on Jesus to show up and fix it.
