  • Virtual Parliamentary Meeting on Fragility, Conflict and Violence in Time of COVID-19
On 6 May 2020, the Parliamentary Network organized with the World Bank Group a virtual meeting on Fragility, Conflict and Violence (FCV).  The event connected legislators, civil servants and parliamentary staff from across the globe with World Bank experts and management to learn about the World Bank’s newest FCV strategy with an emphasis on operations in the Sahel region and in the context of COVID-19.

Participants heard from their parliamentary colleagues around the world representing fragile and conflict-inflicted countries as well as donor countries with a special interest in FCV. They shared insights into actions their parliaments can take to enhance country outcomes in fragile and conflict-affected nations and provided their feedback on the World Bank FCV strategy while considering targeted legislation and development funding.

  • Virtual Parliamentary Briefing on Pandemics
On 24 April 2020, the World Bank Group and the Parliamentary Network on the World Bank and IMF held a Virtual Parliamentary Briefing on Pandemics with a special focus on COVID-19 to engage legislators from across the globe with World Bank Group senior management and experts on how to take rapid, coordinated action to mitigate the negative human and economic effects of COVID-19 and future pandemics.

This meeting allowed parliamentarians to learn more about pandemics, the experiences and best practices of their peers, and the World Bank Group’s role in providing policy advice, technical assistance, and emergency support tailored to countries’ unique needs. They had the opportunity to explore legislative efforts they can adapt to their country to bolster physical and human capital, protect the private sector, and limit the negative social and economic impacts on the most vulnerable. Legislators discussed the urgent needs of their respective constituencies and agreed on the need for a global response to the COVID-19 crisis.
