The New Normal

The pandemic has been tough for everyone, especially those experiencing poverty.

In The Mortgage Centre's new video series, The New Normal, they'll be talking with thought leaders from our local community about housing and emerging local trends and how we can navigate the new normal together.

In this episode, they chat with Jaya James, Executive Director of HOPE House to learn more about how we are learning quickly during this 'new normal' and what we are doing to serve the Guelph community through COVID-19.

We are all so thankful for the beautiful weather we've been enjoying! It's planting time!

Growing foods in cities is one way to help mitigate food security issues.  Our Harvest of HOPE crops, grown at Ignatius Farm, are used to supply the Food Market with fresh produce throughout the summer and fall months. Each year, we harvest more than 50,000 lbs of fresh produce, and because we cannot use it all, the surplus is donated and delivered to other local service providers through our HOPE in Motion delivery vehicles. This ensures that people accessing different service points throughout the city can get good-quality, farm fresh produce.

Gardens provide well-documented mental health benefits like being outside and giving out-of-school kids the chance to learn while interacting with nature. Importantly, they will provide local, nourishing foods in dense urban centres to support our bodies and minds during this global health crisis (The Conversation, GuelphToday.com, May 25, 2020).

We hope you're getting plenty of fresh air and time in your own garden or a community garden close to you as part of your self-care regimen during this time.

We are very thankful to the Ontario Trillium Foundation for generous funding to support this year's Harvest of HOPE. Ontario Trillium Foundation, an agency of the Government of Ontario, and one of Canada’s largest granting foundations.
