The Strength of Community
Our Emergency Child Care Program has served more than 80 kids since opening in April.

Dear YMCA member,

The YMCA has a long, rich history of responding to crises by rising to meet the needs of the communities we serve, even when faced with extraordinary challenges. In the three months since the closure of our Metro Y facilities amid the coronavirus pandemic, we've been able to continue serving our members in unique and impactful ways.

Since we launched our Strength of Community campaign in April, we've been able to raise $100,000 toward a goal of $250,000 to support our outreach in the community during the COVID-19 emergency. Here's a glimpse at the impact of our campaign, by the numbers:

  • Care provided for 84 children of essential workers at 2 Emergency Child Care locations
  • 100,000 pounds of food distributed across 6 Y branches, feeding approximately 5,000 people
  • 180 pints of lifesaving blood for approximately 540 people
  • 30 low-cost virtual programs to help youth and adults grow and thrive
  • 4,700 diapers to assist more than 120 families through multiple diaper drives
  • 1,174 virtual "scan-ins" to the Y
  • 450 videos uploaded to our YouTube channels with healthy living content, youth activities, and virtual camp experiences
  • Connections for 3,000 seniors through virtual programs, phone calls, newsletters, comfort cards, and care packages, and socially distant in-person visits
We've also been able to support our staff financially affected by the pandemic and closure of our Ys, through our Employee Assistance Fund. We've awarded $133,000 to staff through donations to this fund from our Metro Y association, colleagues, and the community.
Here are the some of the stories from people whom the Y has impacted:

Emergency Child Care Provides Sense of Normalcy Amid Uncertainty

For Anastasia Kunac and Brian Milhorn, the YMCA’s Emergency Child Care program has been providing their sons Malcolm and Andrej with a sense of normalcy in a new and strange reality for young children - as well as adults. Read more on our Blog.

My Conversation with Maureen
It’s been an emotional roller coaster reaching out and speaking to our seniors. Some share that they are challenged to find any normalcy, regular exercise or happiness, even though they try. Read more on our Blog.

Y Comes to Employee's Rescue During Hardship
While our physical doors may be closed, the YMCA has remained open to serve members of the community facing hardships during the COVID-19 crisis. Those people in the community include Y members, their neighbors, and even Y staff. Read more on our Blog.

Caring for Residents in the COVID-19 Epicenter
The Greater Bergen County YMCA, a branch of the Metro YMCA of the Oranges, has been providing long-term low cost housing for men for over 90 years. Read more on our Blog.

These are just some of the examples of the hard work of Y staff and volunteers. Our branches continue to coordinate with community leaders and organizations to find more opportunities for the Y to serve our neighbors.
