Hockey Ireland Statement

Hockey Ireland Coronavirus (COVID-19) UPDATE No. 5 regarding Return to Hockey Protocol.

27 May 2020

Hockey Ireland notes and welcomes the plans published by the Irish Government, Sport Ireland and Sport Northern Ireland concerning the roadmaps relating to the possible return of sporting activity, including Hockey.

Hockey Ireland is working closely with Sport Ireland and Sport Northern Ireland to develop guidance and protocols to enable a safe return to hockey activities, including training and competitions.

It is important to note that our return to hockey protocols have NOT been released and that the Irish Government has NOT listed hockey as one of the sports that can resume activity. Therefore, we are reminding the hockey community to continue to adhere to current restrictions and to refrain from organising on-field activity.

We will continue to monitor the dates and timelines for a return to play as appropriate, in line with the advice and guidance of the Government and Sporting Authorities. Our current restrictions and arrangements remain under constant review at this time. The Board of Hockey Ireland still firmly hopes to be able to return to Hockey competitions this year, subject of course to public health guidance.

Hockey Ireland would again like to thank everyone for their patience and understanding during this time and appreciates the efforts many of you are going to in order to continue training while at home.

Please keep safe. For further information on Covid-19: https://www2.hse.ie/conditions/coronavirus/coronavirus.html

Cork Harlequins can provide safe environment for return to training

Ted Williamson - EVENING ECHO - 25th May 2020

WITH cricket on hold, we caught up with Cork Harlequins CC secretary Chris Hickey about sporting life in lockdown.

A Carrigaline native, he says the club have tried to keep players connected.

“As a committee, we recognised the need to reconnect the Quins cricketing family, so we set up a large number of practice drills, challenges and Q&A sessions on social media, YouTube, and Zoom — #StayWithTheGame — to help members interact at a fun level and at a level to relieve the monotony of lockdown, but also with many practical elements for players to work on relating to both the mental and technical sides of the game.

“Our online Q&A group sessions have been fantastic for everyone, and we’d like to thank Jim Troughton, Warickshire CCC head coach; Ireland captain Andrew Balbirnie; Ireland starlet Harry Tector; and the England bowler and Ashes hero of 2009 Graham Onions for their time, interest, and wonderful insights in the sessions."

Last week saw the return of golf and tennis, under strict guidelines, and while matches are a while off yet, Hickey can see no reason why cricketers from all over the country shouldn’t themselves be training this week.

“Cricket practice can be organised following sensible social distancing guidelines quite easily,” he said.

“The country has adhered remarkably well to rules of the crisis and now that groups of four people are able to exercise together following strict guidelines, this should be extended to cricket clubs.

“The mental health benefits cannot be overestimated. Cork Harlequins has a policy in place ready to go which would provide a safe training environment for members, along similar lines to the Tennis Ireland guidelines, but now we just need the go-ahead from Cricket Ireland.”

As the Quins secretary has already suggested, the club has a detailed document around returning to training, specifically around the topics of travelling and arriving to the ground, as well as designated areas for players to sanitise and leave their gear.

There are then strict protocols around how to behave during practice, no-go areas, and net guidelines, as well as re-sanitising after practice and return-home guidelines to be adhered to.

“It’s easily done, but members are very frustrated about why they can’t train due to the fact that there are high levels of natural social distancing in cricket anyway,” he said.

On the chances of matches, he said: “Hopefully. My heart says yes.

“If there aren’t matches, we will endure, fully aware that there are a lot more serious issues in society to contend with than a return to sport. Sport is integral to the well being of the country so we must be ready to play again once conditions are conducive to doing so.”

Say Thank You to our Volunteers
We have many fantastic volunteers in our club and now is your time to mention and celebrate them. Often we work in our own groups not knowing what others do within the club. If there is someone you would like to mention, send in a few words on how they make a difference to your time at Cork Harlequins (email facilities@corkharlequins.com)
Today we honour a volunteer of the past, Billy Carpenter, and is probably top of the heap when it comes to Cork Harlequins volunteers. Billy passed away in July 2002 aged 98 but is still greatly remembered in the club. Twice president of the Irish Hockey Union (1963-65 and 1973-74), Billy held innumerable positions in the Munster Branch and was an Irish selector and international umpire. He held the position of Club President for 1956-71 and again in 1983-84. He had many stories to tell, one was that in playing at a variety of different locations in the club's first 35 years of existence before settling at Farmers Cross in 1961, they once turned up to rural venue only to find that their pitch had been ploughed.

Carpenter joined Harlequins from Maryville in 1933, 8 years after the club's founding. An inside forward "quick on the rebound", he captained the side which lost in a replay to Railway Union in the 1938 Irish Senior Cup Final. His finest hours were being elected president of the club in 1956, the opening of Harlequins' permanent pavilion and grounds in September 1970, umpiring the Holland Ireland international (3-2) in Amsterdam in 1965 and delighted with the club's first Irish Senior Cup win in 2000.

Without Billy Carpenter's involvement in the club it is safe to say the club would not be where it is today, nearly 100 years later.
