Biki News: May 2020
Have you seen the newest Biki bike design? We're partnering with Elemental Excelerator and Farm Link Hawaiʻi to support local farms and increase awareness about local food sourcing.

According to Farm Link, after the COVID-19 shelter-in-place order, local growers saw a sharp decline in restaurant and farmers’ market sales. At the same time, demand from individual households on the Farm Link online marketplace increased by 3,000%! As a result, Farm Link has transformed its operation to help local farmers with direct-to-consumer sales and home delivery. They're also working towards accepting SNAP-EBT sometime the summer.
All 50 Farm Link bikes were sponsored by Elemental Excelerator, a proud supporter of both Farm Link Hawai‘i and Bikeshare Hawaii. Their mission is to accelerate solutions to urgent environmental challenges and deploy them in the communities that need them the most.

A single Elemental-sponsored Biki has the potential to serve nearly 2,500 riders, travel more than 6,700 miles, and save 2,219.9 pounds of carbon annually (compared to a car)!

BIKING DURING COVID-19
One industry thriving during COVID-19 pandemic
While we've seen a decline in Biki rides due to fewer commuters and visitors, we are thrilled to see more people biking and supporting our local bike shops. We know that the more people who bike, the greater the demand for better biking infrastructure and safer places to ride. This makes our streets safer for everyone!

And it isn't just happening in Hawaii... Cycling is skyrocketing across the globe and cities are taking action and repurposing streets. Montreal plans to build over 200 miles of new pedestrian and bike paths this summer and Rome will be constructing 93 miles of temporary and permanent bike routes. In addition, New OrleansSan JoséLas Vegas, and Boston are helping restaurants recover by laying the groundwork for outdoor dining spaces. (Source: NACTO)
CLIMATE ACTION PLAN SURVEY
Did you know that fossil-fuel powered transportation is the largest source of carbon pollution on Oahu? The Office of Climate Change, Sustainability and Resiliency is working on a Carbon Action Plan to help steer O‘ahu’s transition to a 100% clean energy and transportation economy. Please share your input by completing their survey before 5/31.

ALA WAI PARK ROUTE
A favorite route along the Lei of Parks multi-use trail. This 2.8 mile route is great for Biki beginners.
The Biki Crew is still hard at work making sure our equipment is clean and safe! If you see them in the field, be sure to throw them a shaka.

"As an owner of multiple rentals, I would always recommend Biki to our guests. Since guests aren't here due to COVID-19, I've started riding instead. It's been great cruising Ala Moana Beach Park and other areas during the pandemic. We use hand sanitizer spray to wipe down bikes and off we go!"

Best Biki Tip: Continue to follow the rules of the road and use all standard safety precautions, even though fewer people are on the road.
