Springfield School

29 May 2020

Kia Ora Koutou,

I have had a great week engaging with children across all classes and working with some junior students who are visiting our school in preparation for their start to primary school.
This week we welcomed Annabelle Peacock to our Piwakawaka whānau, which increases our number in the junior room to 14. Our total roll now sits at 50.

With the current COVID-19 level still sitting at 2, the Board and Staff have made the decision not to go ahead with school-wide skiing next term. As a high-risk sport and given how many other things are being cancelled, it really was the best decision to make at this time. We appreciate that this will be disappointing for many of you. If you wish to take your child/ren up skiing in the afternoon they will not be marked as ‘unjustified absence’. We are coordinating with Porters for a day that this will be possible. If you do choose to take your child/ren skiing, this will not be in association with the school and it will be user pays. The wood that we have supplied to Porters, as we do every year, will remain ‘in the bank’ for future use so that all children continue to benefit from this opportunity. Porters requires numbers attending so please email through to the office or text if you intend on making use of the afternoon skiing. Once they know rough numbers, Porters will be able to let us know a day that will suit. I will have more information for you in the coming week around what this will look like and the likely costs involved.

It has been an interesting week as we continue to work around the limitations that Alert Level 2 presents but the children have been great at adopting the necessary changes. Thank you again for supporting the systems we have in place around pick up and drop off as well as coming onsite.

With the weather now cooling down, children are welcome to bring along a pair of slippers to wear in the classroom. For many students, a second pair of socks is a great idea too!

Have a wonderful long weekend everyone!

Nga mihi

UNIFORM
As you will have seen over the last few newsletters, we have provided you with information around the purchase of new uniform items. The office has a very limited supply of second-hand items so you can check in with Kylie if you still require something but do not wish to purchase new.
If there is any reason why your child is not in the correct school uniform, they are required to provide their classroom teacher with a note. The note is to cover non uniform items for a few days, it is not a permanent solution. Please feel free to contact me if you have any questions or concerns around this.

REBUILD
While we have been a bit quiet with our communication of late, the cogs have still been turning in the background. The Board has now met with our landscape architect and he has gone away with some ideas from the staff, students and Board. We will be looking to have a community consultation in the near future that will allow you the opportunity to be part of the conversation. Stay tuned for more information!

Due to the disruption already encountered this year, we are reluctant to cause any more and are negotiating with our project management team to delay the demolition of our current buildings until the Christmas holidays. We will keep you as updated as we can with this.

QUEEN’S BIRTHDAY
This coming Monday 1st June is Queen's Birthday.  School will be closed on Monday.  We hope you enjoy the long weekend.

SKIING
As mentioned above, please indicate to Kylie if you are intending on taking your child/ren up skiing one afternoon each week. We need numbers by Wednesday 3rd June.

***𝓐𝓡𝓞𝓤𝓝𝓓 𝓣𝓗𝓔 𝓢𝓒𝓗𝓞𝓞𝓛 𝓣𝓗𝓘𝓢 𝓦𝓔𝓔𝓚***

This week in Ruru we took a closer look at important Māori symbols. Students looked at the meanings behind these symbols and chose the one they felt best represented them. Students then created printing templates from styrofoam and using black ink printed their own backgrounds. They then moulded their taonga from salt dough and painted them green. All these elements were combined together to complete their artwork.

Kohanga has been talking about Springfield and all the things that make it so special to all of us. After that, we looked at examples of maps and used the landmarks we know and love to create a map of Springfield. Check out the doughnuts!!

Piwakawaka had a great morning creating robots and meeting the school robots.
