This Sunday we will hear these familiar words from the
Gospel of Matthew:
Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, and teaching them to obey everything that I have commanded you. And remember,
I am with you always, to the end of the age.
Despite how these words have been abused, these are good words, and it’s a commission that shapes us and beckons us forward into ministry and mission for the world. What Matthew is envisioning is an inclusive human community, which includes all nations and all kinds of people of every class and culture and skin color and all the other distinctions that may separate us.
In this time of COVID 19, what would happen upon the face of the earth if we embodied the presence of Christ and his compassion, grace, mercy, and forgiveness for all peoples of the earth? What if this became the “new normal” for us and for our world?
Not only does Jesus give us a challenging commission, he sends us forth with a promise that he is with us always, to the end of the age. We’re not in this alone. Nor do we travel in our own strength and power. Because Jesus is with us, we will continue our journey with confidence, courage, and hope. Please join us in worship this Sunday where we will be emboldened for the work Jesus has entrusted to us.

Preaching this Sunday is Bishop Elizabeth Eaton. Bishop Eaton is the presiding Bishop of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America (ELCA), and she is taking this Sunday, Trinity Sunday, to share a sermon with all the congregations of the ELCA. Please join us for her message this Sunday.
In contemplation of the gravity of the COVID-19 situation, Bishop Eaton, along with the Most Rev. Michael B. Curry, presiding bishop of the Episcopal Church, invite members to pray: A Prayer for the Power of the Spirit among the People of God. This new prayer for Pentecost was crafted by a team of Lutheran and Episcopal prayer leaders in light of the COVID-19 pandemic. The ELCA and the Episcopal Church are approaching the 20th anniversary of their full communion agreement “Called to Common Mission.”
🙏 Let us Pray 🙏
God of all power and love, we give thanks for your unfailing presence and the hope you provide in times of uncertainty and loss. Send your Holy Spirit to enkindle in us your holy fire. Revive us to live as Christ’s body in the world: a people who pray, worship, learn, break bread, share life, heal neighbors, bear good news, seek justice, rest and grow in the Spirit. Wherever and however we gather, unite us in common prayer and send us in common mission, that we and the whole creation might be restored and renewed, through Jesus Christ our Lord.
Amen.
