Along with the activities listed below, the library is assiduously working behind the scenes to prepare for the next steps forward.  We are working closely with the Village, following directives from the Health Officer and OEM, to develop protocols which prioritize the health and safety of all.  We are also coordinating with Maplewood library, other Essex County libraries, and libraries statewide to institute best practices on everything from safe handling of materials to the gradual return of services.
Governor Murphy has stated that the re-opening of public libraries, ordered closed in Executive Order 107, will be considered in the state’s Phase Two plans (the state is currently in its Phase One).  Once that order is amended, the first service to be opened will be making hard copy materials for available for pickup. The second will be the gradual re-opening of the building, with restrictions as necessary, following recommended protocols and state-wide directives. The library will follow all best practices and is actively monitoring health guidelines.
In the meantime, rest assured that preparation is underway - and that online resources will always be available and online programming will continue.

La Cinematheque Film Club at SOPAC

During difficult times like these, we turn to the arts for comfort, stimulation, and connection.  Our vibrant community of art and film lovers are always looking for opportunities to come together and celebrate the arts.

As a way to stay connected during this isolation, New Wave Productions is introducing the Quarantine Conversations, live, free Zoom conversations about major moments in art and film history.

Van Gogh: The Final Days  On May 30 at 6PM
The French New Wave: A Film Revolution  On June 6 at 6PM

Both events feature our good friend, film scholar Gerard Amsellem.

Behind the Scenes
with Michael Pucci

Being a librarian from home has some advantages -- can't beat the commute! -- but it's no replacement for helping people face-to-face, and not nearly as fun.

Until we are back together in person, I am helping with SOPL's online presence, hosting our weekly programming on Zoom and posting all kinds of interesting items on social media that will help your quarantine go a little better. Make sure to follow us on Twitter and Facebook!

I have also been keeping an eye on the new titles that you'll be asking for once we re-open. We have added more bestsellers and in-demand books on ELibrary, and are preparing to order print books once again.

I also urge you to take advantage of the digital resources available with your library card, including e-books and audiobooks on Libby, streaming movies with Kanopy, and language-learning with Mango. Please email me if there's anything we can help with while the building is closed.
Our Stories
We want to hear your community stories!
Through your stories, art, poems, narratives, audio recordings, emails, hand written letters, short videos, photos, links to Youtube, we can all find some value in what we are going through right now. We are looking for anything that would be relevant to this time and the place.
Your stories may be sad, happy, community minded, artistic - about weeks, or a day, or a fleeting moment or thought. Are you finding or making sidewalk art, new ways to celebrate birthdays/holidays, new ways to mourn/celebrate birth?  Are you creating poetry ? Are you making music – or listening to it – or dancing?
Start sharing NOW! Keep your notes, drawings, thoughts, pictures of what you are working on. Post on your own social media platforms, tag us on #SOPLourstories..And email  ourstories@sopl.org - make it part of our local history collection.
