HEROS COVID-19 Study
CFAAR will be a site for the nationwide NIH-funded study to help determine the rate of novel coronavirus infection in children and their family members in the United States. The study, called Human Epidemiology and Response to SARS-CoV-2 (HEROS), also will help determine what percentage of children infected with SARS-CoV-2, the virus that causes COVID-19, develop symptoms of the disease. In addition, the HEROS study will examine whether rates of SARS-CoV-2 infection differ between children who have asthma or other allergic conditions and children who do not. Read more about it here.

Lisa Lombard, a licensed clinical psychologist, has been providing general psychological services and specialized mind-body treatment to children, families, and adults for over 25 years. She earned her Ph.D. in psychology/human development from the University of Chicago. In her private practice, she provides psychotherapy to children, teens, and families with a particular emphasis on anxiety, stress-mediated health concerns, and pain management. She also consults to a preschool/elementary school and supervises psychology graduate students. She is excited to integrate her expertise in pediatric psychology with her specialized training in mind-body practices as she develops interventions that support children and families coping with food allergies. At the start of Memorial Day weekend, the FDA issued guidance changing the labeling requirements for non-top 8 allergens including sesame due to COVID-19. It is very important to us that the food allergy community stay informed.
The final guidance document written by the FDA can be viewed here.

The book teaches kids about coronavirus and helps them learn how to stay safe. This excellent resource is written in a tone and style that young people will embrace and love especially during this time of stress and uncertainty.

Please see below for coverage on food allergy prevalence and related correlates among Medicaid-enrolled children. The publication was highlighted in the Latest News section of Ann & Robert H. Lurie Children's Hospital of Chicago and the News Medical: Life Sciences website.
Prevalence and Correlates of Food Allergy Among Medicaid-Enrolled United States Children
Bilaver L, Kanaley M, Fierstein J, Gupta RS.
"We were surprised to find such a large discrepancy in estimates of food allergy prevalence in children on Medicaid compared to the general population. Our findings suggest potential under-diagnosis of food allergy among Medicaid-enrolled children. Families in the Medicaid program may be encountering barriers to accessing and affording specialists and potentially life-saving epinephrine prescription."
Ruchi Gupta, MD, MPH, senior author, pediatrician and food allergy researcher at Ann & Robert H. Lurie Children's Hospital of Chicago and Professor of Pediatrics and Medicine at Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicine
