Dear fellow EU citizen,
In the past three and a half years, through the In Limbo Project and its books, we have been collecting your stories to ensure that they could be read by politicians and the general public.
Given the 2016 Referendum denied us a vote, we wanted to ensure that our collective voices could be heard loud and clear.
In 2017, when we asked more than a thousand EU citizens how they felt, your most prevalent answer was: betrayed.
Indeed, we felt betrayed when the Vote Leave promise that nothing would change for us was not maintained;
We felt betrayed when we became “bargaining chips” for this government in order to obtain a better deal;
And we also felt betrayed when Theresa May called us “queue-jumpers” and Johnson insisted that EU citizens had “treated the UK as their own country for too long”.
But there is more:
During the European Elections in May last year, thousands of EU citizens were turned away at the ballot box because they were told that they should have submitted an extra form (only required from us); some, including British people living in the rest of Europe, were told that these extra forms were lost or not processed in time; and others were even told to go back to their countries to vote. I remember collecting your angry voices that morning and being shocked by the sheer volume of them.
My questions to you today are:
Can we leave this unchallenged?
Can we allow it to happen again?
If EU citizens can be stripped of the right to vote, a right enshrined in law, what would prevent the Government from stripping us of further rights?
Discrimination is never acceptable and should never go unchallenged. This is why I believe we must hold this untrustworthy Government to account: to prevent future systemic discrimination towards us. This case would set an important precedent.
This is our home, despite what Johnson said. Let’s never forget that and let’s keep on making our voices heard today by supporting and donating to this just cause.
