End of May update, news from Richmond Council and more...

Local update: Friday 29 May 2020

Dear Hampton Society supporter,

Thank you for all your messages that have been rolling in this week. I hope you are still getting some use out of these now weekly messages. First of all this week, please read our editor, Maura Water’s request for stories for the summer newsletter.

Victory Celebration Story Reminder

From Maura Waters, Newsletter Editor

Hey there! Back on 18 May I asked you, the readers, to rack your brains for any memories of WWII’s VE and VJ Day celebrations for our Summer Newsletter.

I hope our memories, or at least those of our parents and grandparents, will surely recall these war-end festivities. Maybe because they were followed by several grim years of rationing, VE and VJ Days were all the more memorable.

So what do you remember of these events, especially if you lived in Hampton? Whether indoors, in the garden or even the street can you remember what the grown-ups told you about those brief festivities? It doesn’t have to be a locally based, remember it’s the story rather than the place that’s important.

On another theme, I would also like your tales of how you have coped under lockdown. Please let me know the things you have done that you wouldn’t normally do either as families or in the community.

I have a newsletter to put to bed so please search those memory banks and photograph albums showing how we celebrated the end of the war as soon as you can (in the next few days). The Hampton Society hope it will be one of those local history pieces that we will look back on in years to come.

Please email me, Maura, at or phone me on 020 8979 9654. 300 words is the ideal length for each one if you need a guide.

Best of luck and thank-you for taking the time to read this.

Update from Richmond Council

Although my grammar and spelling can go awry from time to time, I have contacted the council twice to ask them to amend the following graphic that has spelt ‘metres’ incorrectly.

Beware the Scams!

One of us was nearly caught. Apparently, this is a common scam. We received a message from a known local resident telling us that she was away from home, looking after two relatives with the virus. She asked us to purchase some tokens for her. It seemed a reasonable request! However, a phone call to the resident concerned confirmed that she knew nothing of the matter – and her e-mail account must have been hacked. Beware! This seems to be a widely used scam, all the more plausible if it comes in the name of a person well-known to the recipient of the message. If you receive such a message, check before paying!

Chief Superintendents letter

I hope you are well.  As we move towards the weekend, the weather forecast predicts plenty of sunshine and highs of over 20 degrees. With the anticipated hot weather, our policing approach will remain the same as before. You will see officers engaging with our communities and explaining the regulations and we will only enforce as a last resort. The current policing role is focused on any larger gathering/groups or persistent breaches where the risk to health would be at its greatest.

The Prime Minister has announced further changes that will take effect from Monday 1st June. This includes allowing up to six people to meet outside - provided those from different households continue to strictly observe social distancing. People will now also be able to meet in gardens and other private outdoor spaces. These changes will mean friends and family can start to meet their loved ones again. Everyone has a responsibility to continue to follow the guidelines.

As things slowly return back to normal, we expect to see a return of things we have come to experience in the past. We are ready to meet any increase in demand. As ever, we ask the public to stay vigilant, and to report any emergencies through 999.

I would also like to bring to your attention some advice in relation vulnerable children and fraud.

National Trust update

We’ve been keeping you up to date on our reopening plans and we’re pleased to be able to share more news with you today. First though, an update. We’ve now reopened more than 200 coast and countryside car parks in England and lots of you have been kind enough to share your news and views about visiting. It’s been so nice to hear from you, so thank you for sharing your stories with us and for your patience as we gradually reopen.

And now some good news. From 3 June we’re able to reopen the first of our gardens and parklands in England and Northern Ireland, with more opening over the coming weeks. For now, our houses remain closed and we'll open these as soon as we can. To open these gardens and parklands safely, we’ve had to reduce the number of people we can welcome at one time, so you'll need to book in advance. New booking timeslots become available on a Friday for visits the following week.

From tomorrow you’ll be able to find out what’s opening near you and book a visit. Your visit to us may be different from usual, because there are a few things we need everyone to do to help us keep places open safely.

We’re working hard to open more places as soon as possible. In Wales, we continue to prepare for government guidance to change.

In the meantime, if you want to know more about how the booking process works and what to expect from your visit, you can click the link below. We’re really looking forward to seeing you very soon.

Baby Zoomers are the way forward for dementia charity My Life Films

Embracing change was the only way one small charity could continue with their award-winning service during this difficult time. My Life Films based in Richmond, south west London produce life story films for people living with dementia, capturing their memories with photographs, interviews & music. Currently unable to film with the families the team realised the only way to make the films was without anyone leaving their homes.

Video chats are now the new norm as an alternative to meeting up and they are also cross generational even the so called ‘baby zoomers’ have got to grips with the technology. The charity adopted this technology to film the family interviews this way.

“My job is to facilitate an environment where the families can tell their story, so when it comes to getting the materials together and working the technology” says Kenyon Shankie, a filmmaker with My Life Films, he added “ I’m there to support the family from beginning to end.”

Gothic fantasy: Horace Walpole and Strawberry Hill House

Horace Walpole was a gifted author and man of letters, yet his most fanciful creation was his second home in London. Nancy Alsop visits Strawberry Hill House

Horace Walpole, 4th Earl of Orford, was a man whose extraordinary dreams found expression both on the page and in his extraordinary home. “Imagination was given to man to compensate him for what he isn’t,” he once wrote. “A sense of humour was provided to console him for what he is.” By his own logic, then, his richness of imagination must have compensated for a near-total absence of character. His letters, which number some 7,000 and chronicle the Georgian era with more colour than any of other correspondent of that period, beg to differ.
