👋🏾 Hey From Colorintech - #005

This week was particularly consuming for the Black community. Nonetheless we see it as an opportunity to share with you our thoughts and resources to build for a better future.

We designed an infographic for those who wanted to share how people can support the #BlackLivesMatter movement - Link here

🗞️Diversity and inclusion news🗞️
This last week saw another tragic example of the racism the Black community endures across the world. We've been shocked, outraged and traumatised by the killing of George Floyd😰.

The level of outrage was so pertinent we saw the likes of Adidas and Nike come together, once silent public figures (on racial injustice) find their voices and tech companies including Salesforce, Netflix, Twitter, HubSpot, and our valued partners Box speak out on it, followed presumably by those who recognized it was bad PR not to follow suit🔊.

Some companies got it wrong (Pretty Little Thing), some bought shame on themselves (Loreal), some were called hypocrites (YouTube - See thread) whilst others pointed out how long they'd been vocal. Emily Weiss at Glossier, set an example of CEO allyship (see her reply in comments) but we have seen few substantively follow🗣️. Where some have made a stance, discontent has grown (see Facebook), and many commentators have started calling out the lipservice many suspect. Ultimately we want more than words.

This is bigger than tech and we hope that we'll see more companies work towards dismantling the oppression of the black community.👊🏾

So What?: Given this Desmond Tutu quote had a lot of traction "If you are neutral in situations of injustice, you have chosen the side of the oppressor", it got us thinking, what level of injustice will cause the once "silent" companies to not just speak out but act"?👀

Here is an infographic we put together on how you can be an ally to the cause

🙅🏾‍♂️Social Media Censorship🙅🏾‍♂️
This last week we've see Twitter start to clamp down on the glorification of violence and the spread of misinformation by fact checking and censoring Donald Trump.

Social media platforms have long argued that they aren't responsible for the content on the published on their platforms (a protection often referred to as section 230)💁🏾‍♂️.

In retaliation Trump signed in an executive order which may challenge that position. The outcome is one for the American legal process to decide, but what we did see was a break from the solidarity amongst the platforms with Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg taking a different approach to Twitter's Jack Dorsey🤨.

So what?: Twitter has come under considerable criticism about the consistency in which it applies these measures, which made us think, with so much misinformation out there how should social media companies move forwards🤔

🛫Hardware in the skies🌴

With news about summer holidays potentially being back on, the aviation industry came out with a range of press activity on how safe the air is on aeroplanes. The deluge of videos, media interviews and the prospect of High intensity UV flashes certainly made a us take notice🤔

UV flashes cleansing planes after every trip reminded us, tech isn't by any means just about software🕹️

So what?: If you plan on flying this year, it will be a very different experience🛫

🚀 To infinity and beyond🚀

Its been a good week for Tech Entreprenur and Tesla CEO (Elon Musk). His SpaceX company was the first private org to send Nasa astronauts into space. Whilst this is testmanet to following a huge vision, Elon did note it took 100k people to send 2 people 100miles and even he doubted if that was enough🚀

Still this tops a good week for him. He also just got the chance to bank ~$1 billion Dollars. For his leadership of Tesla, the board incentived him with options for ~1.7m shares. He can buy them at around $350 dollars, but are worth around $820 now. If he keeps on track, he's on course to become, well, the richest man in the universe💰

Ps. Elon also runs a company called The Boring company. Read more about it here.😉

So what?: We're probably one step closer to getting humans to Mars and Elons even richer.👽

🇨🇳The worlds most valuable start up🇨🇳

Bytedance (owners of TikTok) reported a doubling of its revenue to (~$17bn) dollars, which left it with over ~$6bn cash in the bank and profits of over ~£3bn (It's somewhat surprising to see startups to make profits that big). These figures pushed many to claim at a valuation close to $180bn Bytedance is the worlds most valuable startup💸.

Bytedance is backed by formidable VC's Sequoia and Softbank ((which gave its vision fund CEO a pay rise despite their disastrous year), with incentives like that, what even is failure🙃) a juicy IPO appears inevitable🤤

So what?: There are a numer of Chinese mega tech businesses which have such scale, if they can penetrate Western markets like Bytedance have, we may see a reshaping of our markets, and platforms💹
