Emergency Dachshund Care Form

Dachshund Rescue has produced a useful Emergency Care Form (PDF) that you can leave somewhere prominently in your home in the event of an unexpected emergency to safeguard your Dachshund(s).

Do you really want a Dachshund? Do you really want one right now? Here's a healthy dose of reality.

Pets and Covid Survey

How are your dogs coping with the lockdown?

The RCVS is investigating the effect the official confinement is having on the relationship people have with their pets, as well as the behaviour of pets and their quality of life.

Complete their survey here.

Last month, our charity, Dachshund Health UK, made a donation of £1000 to support the work of Dedicated to Dachshunds with IVDD. This charity, run by Charlotte Baldwin, does an amazing job supporting owners of dogs with IVDD as they go through treatment and rehabilitation. They have, sadly, seen a massive increase in demand for their support and our Trustees were delighted to be able to offer them our support.
Breed Council Chairman, Ian Seath, was interviewed recently by Talia from the Million Collar Club. You can watch their discussion on back disease (IVDD) in a series of videos, here. The topics are:
  • All about IVDD
  • What is IVDD
  • What are the symptoms of IVDD?
  • Do genetics play a part in IVDD?
  • What are the treatment options for IVDD?
Introducing Match A Dax, a fun card game for all the family, featuring some lovely Twitter sausages, many of whom have themselves been affected by this cruel disease.  Match a Dax joins Devoted To Dachshunds' best selling Christmas cards and tea towels to raise funds for both research into IVDD and towards rehabilitation of those dogs affected by this cruel disease. The money raised will be split between two great causes, 'Dedicated to Dachshunds with IVDD' and the research into IVDD being undertaken by the Dachshund Breed Council.  Devoted to Dachshunds Ltd funds the production of the games, cards and tea towels so that every penny raised will go to these causes.

Online Veterinary Consultations

Joii, who have vets and nurses across the country, has partnered with The Kennel Club to offer members their first video consultation with a vet, for free. Pet owners who sign up to the Joii app will be able to enter a code after registering their details, which then waives the usual cost of £20 for vet video consultation.

The first app from multi-award winning R&D company, Vet-AI, Joii features a free and industry-leading symptom checker, free video calls with vet nurses, video consultations with vets, a range of health clinics with veterinary specialists and behaviourists and 48 hour delivery on treatment and medication. The service is available 24/7, 365 days a year.

Latest Lafora Screening Trends

The latest Breed Records Supplement shows 42 litters of Mini Wires, with 170 puppies. Of those, 8 puppies in 2 litters came from untested parents and are at risk of Lafora. That's 95% safe litters and 5% unsafe litters.

Thanks to Mandy Dance, Chairman of the Wirehaired Dachshund Club for analysing the litter data.

Raise donations for Dachshund Health UK whenever you shop online.
Angus Berry sells decorative signs on ebay, and as a daxie owner has made some with odd comments such as "Hello Sausage". As a member on one of the Facebook Groups had been devastated with a little one getting IVDD, Angus thought it would be a good idea to put £1 donation to Dachshund Health UK for any sign he sold. Last month he donated £31 to our Health Fund.

Thank you to Angus for supporting our work to improve the health and welfare of Dachshunds.

The benefits of pets for kids

There's a new Guest Post on our health website this month.

Direct Line insurance has a really comprehensive guide to the benefits of pets for children. The guide looks at the impact pets have on children, what it takes to own a pet, and demonstrates how a pet is a healthy addition to any child’s upbringing.
