The AccSoc Ledger
Trimester 2 Week 1

A massive welcome back to UNSW and AccSoc for Term 2! Although it has been a relatively 'quiet' term break this time round, I hope everyone took the opportunity to fully recharge and freshen up for the term that is officially starting today.

As you may all be aware, the Federal and NSW Government have started to slowly ease restrictions which means there may be a chance that AccSoc can start to hold face-to-face events on campus again very soon. Nonetheless, we have countless virtual events planned during T2 for you to attend at the comfort of your own home.

A friendly reminder to check Moodle regarding online delivery of your subjects so you don't fall behind and make sure to follow us on our social media so you don't miss any events...because new term new you right!

UNSW BSoc x UNSW AccSoc Presents: Industry Showcase
This showcase is a unique opportunity for you to get to know representatives from your dream employers, the industry insights they hold and the opportunities they have to offer. Members of the recruitment teams and recent graduates will be present, across a broad range of Business fields, to answer your burning questions about the recruitment process and COVID19 disruptions, as well as give tips on getting an edge moving forward. Don’t miss out on this valuable opportunity to gain insights into picking a future career path, during periods of uncertainty.

How does the Industry Showcase work?
Like a traditional Careers Fair, employer ‘booths’ are replaced with unique video rooms, which you may ‘enter’. In these rooms, employer representatives interact with and meet you, the students. Some employers will be presenting company-specific talks on industry-relevant topics, such as interview tips and networking opportunities.

The News: Accountants to the rescue during COVID-19

While frontline health professionals have been saving the lives and health of Australians during the COVID-19 disruptions, accountants have been working flat out to save the businesses and livelihoods of their clients.

Major Government stimulus packages such as JobKeeper and the business cash flow boost payments have been critical in keeping many businesses operating, and these business owners have relied heavily on their accountants to understand the programs and lodge applications on their behalf.

For many accountants, this has created a major stream of new work, with new rules, conditions and eligibility requirements, and for some it has escalated their levels of stress.

“This has been a torrid time for many in the accounting profession and many are struggling with a tsunami of work which just came out of the blue,” says Paul Drum, General Manager of External Affairs at CPA Australia.

Meet The Team
Vivian Tao - Sponsorship Director

What is your greatest fear?
I can't decide between complacence and clowns.

What is your favourite drink?
Long Island! (just kidding, it's Malibu, Pinepple, and Tequila)

Why did you join AccSoc?
At first, being part of AccSoc was confusing because I didn't do accounting, but I realised AccSoc was much more than that! I joined because I was looking to step outside my comfort zone, do something new and on the way meet some incredible people. It was the most random thing ever and what I have learned from it is to just take every opportunity that gets thrown at you, because you never know what kind of amazing opportunities it presents!
